"Unconditional Love"
Part 14
The phone ringing on the bedside table jolted Eric out of his peaceful reverie with Maya. He reluctantly reached for it, checking the screen before answering. His mom, Sandy, was calling. "Hey, Mom," Eric said, trying to sound more awake than he felt. "Good morning, sweetie," Sandy replied, her voice warm and cheerful. "I hope I'm not disturbing you. I was just wondering if you've talked to Maya lately." Eric's heart skipped a beat as he exchanged a glance with Maya, who was watching him with a curious expression. "Yeah, we talked yesterday," Eric said, trying to play it cool. Sandy chuckled. "I bet you did. Listen, Eric, I need to talk to you about something. I know about you and Maya." Eric felt a surge of panic, wondering how his mom had found out. He glanced at Maya, who looked equally concerned. "How did you...?" Eric started to ask. "I have my ways," Sandy said with a laugh. "Let's just say I've been doing some digging. And I have to say, I'm not surprised. You two are meant to be together, Eric." Eric's eyes widened in shock. "Mom, it's complicated. She's my teacher." "I know that," Sandy said firmly. "But I also know that Maya is an amazing person. She's kind, intelligent, and caring. And I trust her, Eric. I trust her not to hurt you or take advantage of you, even if you are her student." Maya's eyes welled up with tears as she listened to the conversation, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Sandy. "But what about the rules, Mom?" Eric asked, feeling a sense of unease. "The school rules, I mean. What if we get in trouble?" "Rules are meant to be broken, Eric," Sandy said with a chuckle. "Or at least, bent. I know that Maya loves you, and I know that you love her. And I support that. I want you to be happy, sweetie. And if Maya makes you happy, then I'm all for it." Eric looked at Maya, feeling a sense of wonder and relief. He had expected his mom to be angry or disapproving, but instead, she was being understanding and supportive. "Thanks, Mom," Eric said, feeling a sense of gratitude towards his mom. "Anytime, sweetie," Sandy said. "Just remember, I'm always here for you, no matter what. And I trust Maya to take care of you." With that, Sandy hung up, leaving Eric and Maya to process the conversation. Eric looked at Maya, who was smiling at him. "I think my mom likes you," Eric said, grinning. Maya laughed. "I think your mom is amazing," she said, snuggling closer to Eric. As they hugged, Eric felt a sense of relief wash over him. Maybe, just maybe, they could make this work after all.
