Chapter 5: Into the Unknown
Part 5
The air seemed to vibrate with an otherworldly power as we walked, the trees around us growing taller and the shadows deepening. Hange's grip on my hand tightened, his eyes scanning the surroundings with an intensity that made me feel like we were walking into a trap. I could sense it too, a creeping feeling of unease that seemed to seep into my bones. As we rounded a bend in the path, a clearing came into view. In the center of the clearing stood an ancient, gnarled tree, its branches twisted and tangled in a way that seemed almost... deliberate. The air around the tree seemed to pulse with a strange energy, like a heartbeat. Hange's eyes locked onto the tree, his expression unreadable. I could sense his tension, his muscles coiled and ready to spring into action. I followed his gaze, my own eyes drawn to the tree. "What is this place?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. Hange's eyes flicked to mine, his expression grim. "I don't know," he said, his voice low and even. "But I think it's connected to the presence I sensed." Without another word, he pulled me closer, his arm wrapping around my shoulders as we approached the tree. As we drew nearer, the energy emanating from it grew stronger, making my skin prickle with goosebumps. Suddenly, the air around us seemed to shift, like a curtain of fabric rustling. The tree's branches seemed to... move, as if they were alive. I gasped, my heart racing with fear. Hange's arm tightened around me, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "What's happening?" he growled, his voice low and menacing. The branches seemed to twist and writhe, like snakes slithering through the air. I felt a presence closing in around us, a presence that seemed to be made of darkness and shadow. And then, a figure stepped out of the tree's trunk. It was humanoid in shape, but its body seemed to be made of the same twisted, gnarled wood as the tree. Its eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, a light that seemed to pierce through the darkness. Hange's arm wrapped around me like a shield, his eyes fixed on the figure. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice firm and commanding. The figure didn't respond. Instead, it reached out a branch-like hand and touched the trunk of the tree. The air around us seemed to ripple, like water disturbed by a stone. And then, a vision burst forth, a flood of images and emotions that seemed to overwhelm me. I saw a world of ancient forests and towering trees, a world where dragons and humans coexisted in a delicate balance of power. I saw Hange, younger and more reckless, his scales a vibrant shade of blue as he soared through the skies. And I saw me, standing beside him, my own heart filled with a sense of wonder and belonging. The vision faded, leaving me breathless and disoriented. Hange's arm was still wrapped around me, his eyes fixed on the figure. "What did that mean?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Hange's eyes locked onto mine, his expression intense. "I think it's a message," he said, his voice low and even. "A message from the past, and a warning about the future." The figure began to move towards us, its branch-like limbs swaying in a slow, deliberate motion. Hange's grip on me tightened, his eyes never leaving the figure. "We need to get out of here," he said, his voice firm and commanding. "Now." Without another word, he pulled me into a run, the figure and the tree fading into the distance as we fled into the unknown.
