Chapter 11: Unconscious

Part 11

The grand hall of the southern isles' castle was abuzz with the murmur of courtiers and advisors, all gathered for a meeting to discuss the kingdom's economic woes. Iduna, still recovering from her ordeal, had been invited to observe the proceedings, but she had declined, citing her fragile health. Instead, she had chosen to take a stroll in the castle gardens, enjoying the warm sun on her face and the fresh air. Meanwhile, Hans, the prince of the southern isles, stood before the assembly, his face pale and his eyes sunken. He had always been sensitive to the cruel nature of his family, and the weight of their expectations had taken a toll on him. His brothers, Rudi and Runo, stood behind him, their eyes gleaming with mischief. Caleb, the crown prince, sneered at Hans, his voice dripping with condescension. "So, you're suggesting that we lower taxes and increase funding for the people?" he taunted. "That's absurd. We need to increase taxes to fund our military campaigns and expand our territories." Rudi and Runo snickered, their faces twisted in cruel grins. "Yes, Hans, you're always so quick to coddle the people," Rudi jeered. "But what about our own interests? Don't we deserve to benefit from our position?" Hans' face reddened as he struggled to maintain his composure. "I'm just trying to help the people," he stammered. "They're struggling to make ends meet, and-" Runo cut him off, his voice rising in mockery. "Oh, poor Hans, always so concerned about the common folk. You're not fit to rule, brother. You're too soft, too weak." The assembly erupted into a chorus of snickers and jeers, and Hans' face crumpled in humiliation. Iduna, watching from a distance, felt a pang of sympathy for the young prince. She had seen the weight of her own family's expectations bearing down on her, and she knew how crushing it could be. As the meeting adjourned and the assembly dispersed, Hans stumbled out of the grand hall, his eyes brimming with tears. Iduna saw him stumble into a nearby corridor, and she followed him, concern etched on her face. "Hans," she called softly, her voice barely above a whisper. He turned, his eyes flashing with anger and shame. "Leave me alone," he muttered, his voice cracking. But Iduna stood her ground, her expression gentle. "Hans, I know what it's like to be trapped in a situation that's not of your choosing," she said, her voice soft. "But you can't give up. You have to keep fighting, for yourself and for the people you care about." Hans looked at her, his eyes searching for understanding. For a moment, Iduna thought she saw a glimmer of hope, but it was quickly extinguished by the weight of his family's cruelty. In a fit of despair, Hans rushed to his chambers, his mind reeling with thoughts of escape. He grabbed a small vial of poison from his desk drawer and downed its contents, hoping to end his misery once and for all. But fate had other plans. The poison didn't kill him; instead, it sent him tumbling to the floor, convulsing in agony. Iduna, who had followed him to his chambers, rushed to his side, horror etched on her face. "Hans, no!" she cried, shaking him gently. "Don't do this, please!" As Hans' eyes fluttered open, Iduna saw Queen Alice rush into the room, her face etched with worry. "What's happening?" she demanded, her voice firm. Iduna explained the situation, and Queen Alice quickly took charge. She ordered Iduna to help her tie Hans to his bed, to prevent him from harming himself further. Together, they carefully secured Hans to the bed, using soft restraints to immobilize him. Queen Alice then turned to Iduna. "I want you to take care of him," she said, her voice gentle. "He needs someone to watch over him, to make sure he's safe. He will need a sponge bath, make sure the water is not too hot or cold, and make sure he is comfortable." Iduna nodded, her heart heavy with compassion. She knew that she had to help Hans, no matter what it took. And as she looked at him, lying helpless in his bed, she knew that she would do everything in her power to bring him back to the land of the living. She gently began to undress Hans, trying not to cause him any more discomfort. She then soaked a cloth in warm water, and began to clean his body, being careful not to touch any of his wounds. As she worked, she talked softly to him, trying to reassure him that everything would be okay. The water in the basin was a soothing balm to Hans' parched skin, and Iduna's gentle touch was a comfort to his battered soul. She washed his face, his arms, and his chest, taking care to avoid his wounds. As she worked, she noticed that Hans had several cuts and bruises on his body, which she carefully cleaned and dressed. As the hours passed, Hans' condition slowly began to stabilize. Iduna stayed by his side, holding his hand and talking to him softly. She knew that he was in a fragile state, and that he needed her care and compassion to heal. Just as Iduna was finishing up Hans' sponge bath, there was a knock at the door. "Enter," Queen Alice called out. The door opened, and Lars, Hans' brother, stood in the doorway. "Mother, I brought Elsa and Anna from Arendelle to see their mother," he said, his voice soft. Iduna's heart skipped a beat as she saw the two young princesses standing behind Lars. She had not seen them since the shipwreck, and she was overjoyed to be reunited with them. But as she looked at Hans, lying helpless in his bed, she knew that she had to put her own emotions aside and focus on helping him heal. "Thank you, Lars," Queen Alice said, her voice warm. "I'm sure Iduna would appreciate the company." Iduna smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Lars. She knew that she had a long road ahead of her, but with the help of Elsa, Anna, and herself, she was confident that Hans would recover and find a new path in life.
