Shadows of Deceit

Part 2

As Princess Zelda waited in her chambers, her anxiety grew with each passing moment. She had requested a meeting with the castle physician, hoping to get to the bottom of the rumors and concerns that had been plaguing her. Just then, Impa knocked on the door, followed by a harried-looking man in a white coat. "Your Highness, this is Doctor Raymer, the castle physician," Impa announced. Zelda smiled graciously at the doctor. "Ah, Doctor Raymer, thank you for coming so quickly. I have some concerns about Impa's health, and I was hoping you could enlighten me." Doctor Raymer nodded, his expression sympathetic. "Of course, Your Highness. I'm afraid I've been quite busy of late. I've been tending to Link, the young hero, who's been experiencing some... difficulties." Zelda's brow furrowed. "Difficulties? What kind of difficulties?" The doctor hesitated before speaking. "He's been having shortness of breath on and off for a week, but just recently, he's developed some back pain and... well, it's become rather serious. He's unable to breathe on his own, and I've had to set up a makeshift oxygen tent in his quarters." Zelda's eyes widened in alarm. Link, the brave young hero who had saved their kingdom so many times, was ill? She felt a pang of worry and immediately wanted to go to his side. "Please, Doctor Raymer, take me to him," she said urgently. The doctor nodded, though his expression was hesitant. "I'll take you to him, Your Highness, but I must warn you... his condition is quite precarious. I'm not sure it's wise for him to have visitors, especially not someone as... prominent as yourself." Zelda's face set in determination. "I'm not leaving until I see him for myself," she said firmly. Doctor Raymer nodded, though his eyes betrayed his concern. "Very well, Your Highness. Follow me." As they made their way through the castle corridors, Zelda couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Why was Link so ill, and why hadn't she been told about it sooner? She pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on getting to Link's side and offering him her support. When they arrived at Link's quarters, Zelda was taken aback by what she saw. The young hero lay on his bed, his face pale and clammy, his chest rising and falling with each labored breath. A makeshift oxygen tent surrounded him, and various contraptions beeped and whirred around his bed. Zelda's heart went out to him, and she rushed to his side, taking his hand in hers. "Link, I'm so sorry I didn't know," she whispered, her voice trembling. Link's eyes fluttered open, and he managed a weak smile. "I'm... sorry, Zelda," he whispered back. "I didn't want to worry you." Zelda's grip on his hand tightened. "You will never worry me, Link. We're in this together, always." As she looked up at Doctor Raymer, she saw a flicker of something in his eyes - a look of concern, perhaps, or even fear. And in that moment, Zelda knew that there was more to Link's illness than she was being told.
