A Precious Life
Part 14
The doctor's words were barely audible as Ashley felt a sudden rush of pressure and then a sense of relief. "We've got one!" he exclaimed, and Ashley's eyes widened as she saw the tiny form being lifted up. The baby was small, no bigger than a hand, and Ashley's heart skipped a beat as she gazed at him in wonder. But her joy was short-lived, as the doctor's face fell and he began to work frantically to revive the little one. Ashley's eyes welled up with tears as she saw the baby's tiny chest not moving. She felt a scream building inside her, but before she could let it out, the nurse gently placed the baby in her arms. Gerald's hand tightened around hers as he whispered, "It's okay, Ashley. He's going to be okay." But Ashley couldn't shake off the feeling of dread that had settled in her stomach. She looked down at the baby, and her heart ached as she saw his tiny face, pale and still. The doctor and nurse were working quickly, trying to revive the baby, but Ashley could see the worry etched on their faces. She felt a wave of panic wash over her, and she began to rock back and forth, holding the baby close. Gerald pulled her close, his arms wrapping around her and the baby. "We're here, Ashley. We're here for you and our baby," he whispered. Ashley's eyes were fixed on the baby's face, and she could see the tiniest flicker of movement. She held her breath, hoping against hope that it was a sign of life. The nurse looked up, her eyes locking onto Ashley's. "We're almost there," she said, her voice soft and reassuring. Ashley felt a surge of hope, and she leaned in closer to the baby, whispering, "Come on, little one. You can do it." The doctor's hands moved quickly and precisely, and Ashley felt a sense of relief wash over her as she heard the baby's first cry. It was weak and faint, but it was a cry nonetheless. Ashley's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at Gerald, a smile spreading across her face. "He's alive," she whispered. Gerald's face lit up with joy, and he pulled Ashley close, holding her and the baby tightly. "We're a family," he whispered, his voice filled with emotion. But as they basked in the joy of the newborn's arrival, Ashley couldn't help but wonder about the second baby. Where was he? Was he okay?
