"Into the Flickering Flames"
Part 40
As Eira pointed out the mysterious flame, the party gathered around her, peering into the darkness. The flame grew larger, and they could see that it was being carried by a figure standing on the deck of a small, rickety boat. The boat was being paddled by an unseen force, and it was heading straight for their ship. Valoric's hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, his eyes narrowing as he watched the approaching boat. Finnley stood up, his eyes fixed on the flame, and Scorch readied her bow, an arrow nocked and ready to fire. As the boat drew closer, they could see that the figure carrying the flame was a humanoid with wings sprouting from its back. Its skin was a mottled brown and gray, and its eyes seemed to gleam with a malevolent light. It was a featherkin, a creature Eira had heard of but never seen before. The featherkin raised its voice in a shrill cry, and the party could feel a dark energy emanating from it. The air around them seemed to grow colder, and the sea itself seemed to churn and froth in response to the creature's presence. Suddenly, the featherkin flung its head back and let out a blood-curdling scream. The party felt a strange, pulsating energy wash over them, and then they saw that the featherkin was summoning creatures from the depths of the sea. Giant squids and schools of razor-toothed fish erupted from the waves, their eyes glowing with an unnatural hunger. The party's ship was surrounded, and it seemed that they were doomed to be overwhelmed. But Eira was quick to act. She grabbed Scorch's bow and began to fire arrow after arrow into the sea creatures, taking out a squid here, a fish there. Scorch stood beside her, firing blast after blast of dragon magic into the fray. Valoric and Finnley joined the fight, Valoric swinging his sword and Finnley firing his crossbow. The battle was intense, but the party fought well. Scorch's magic seemed to have an especially devastating effect on the sea creatures, and Eira's marksmanship with Scorch's bow was deadly. The featherkin, however, seemed to be the source of the creatures' power, and as long as it lived, the monsters kept coming. Eira spotted the featherkin, its eyes fixed on her with a malevolent glare. She raised Scorch's bow and took aim, firing an arrow straight at the cultist's heart. The featherkin let out a cry of rage and pain as it stumbled backwards, its control over the sea creatures faltering. The monsters began to dissipate, returning to the depths of the sea. The featherkin, however, remained, its wings beating wildly as it stumbled towards the party's ship. Scorch readied another blast of magic, but Eira was quicker. She leapt forward, Scorch's dagger in her hand, and struck the featherkin down. The creature let out a final, defeated cry, and then it was still. The party stood panting, surveying the aftermath of the battle. The sea was calm once more, and their ship was safe. But Eira couldn't shake the feeling that the featherkin had been more than just a random attacker. There had been something deliberate, something calculated, about its actions. Valoric's voice cut through her thoughts. "What was that thing's motive?" he asked, his eyes scanning the horizon. Eira shook her head. "I don't know," she said. "But I think we're about to find out."
