Chapter 1: The New Addition
Part 1
It was a typical chaotic morning at the Kim's convenience store. Mr. and Mrs. Kim were arguing over whose turn it was to make breakfast, while Jun-su was trying to eat a bowl of cereal before rushing out the door to catch the bus to school. Kimchee, the mischievous 10-year-old daughter, was busy making a mess with the rows of chips and candies on the shelves. Just as it seemed like things couldn't get any more hectic, the doorbell above the entrance jingled, signaling the arrival of a newcomer. The family turned to see Mrs. Kim's sister, Auntie Young-sook, walking in with a big smile on her face and a tiny bundle in her arms. "Annyeong, everyone!" Auntie Young-sook exclaimed, as she made her way to the counter. "I'm so sorry I'm late. Traffic was a nightmare." Mrs. Kim rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "You're always late, Young-sook. What's with the baby?" Auntie Young-sook proudly held out the swaddled infant. "Meet your new nephew, everyone! I finally got around to adopting him from Korea." The family stared in surprise, unsure of what to say. Mr. Kim's eyes widened in shock. "Another son? We already have three kids!" Auntie Young-sook chuckled. "Oh, don't worry, he's just a baby. He'll grow up to be a part of the family in no time." As the family began to murmur and ask questions, Kimchee's eyes lit up with excitement. "Can I hold him? Can I name him?" Auntie Young-sook laughed. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, kiddo. We'll figure all that out later." Meanwhile, Jun-su and his brother, Jung-soo, exchanged skeptical glances. They had always been the two oldest sons, and now they were going to have to share the attention of their parents with this...this...newcomer? As the family continued to ooh and ahh over the baby, Mrs. Kim suddenly spoke up. "You know, we should take him to the store's back room and get him settled in. I have some old baby clothes and toys that we can use." Auntie Young-sook nodded, and together they carefully carried the baby to the cramped back room of the convenience store. As they settled in, Mr. Kim looked around at his suddenly expanded family and wondered what other changes this new addition might bring. The baby, who had been quietly sleeping, suddenly let out a loud wail, and the family laughed. "I guess someone's hungry," Auntie Young-sook said, smiling. As they waited for Mrs. Kim to prepare a bottle, Jun-su leaned over to Jung-soo and whispered, "Great, just what we needed. More chaos." Jung-soo chuckled and whispered back, "Hey, at least he's cute." The two brothers shared a look, and for a moment, they forgot about their initial reservations. Maybe this new little brother wouldn't be so bad after all. But as they watched their parents tend to the baby's needs, they couldn't help but wonder: what would the future hold for this new addition to the Kim family?
