Rebirth in Light
Part 28
"Mari? It’s going to be okay. I’m with you now," I said softly, trying to reassure her as she stood frozen in shock. Her eyes, still wide with fear and uncertainty, locked onto mine, and I could see the desperation there, the plea for help. I took a step closer to her, trying not to make any sudden movements that might scare her further. "Everyone believes you to be the demon lord’s beloved daughter," I continued, trying to offer some semblance of hope. "We have beaten the generals before, we can do it again." Mari's gaze drifted away from mine, her eyes scanning the room as if searching for something, anything, to cling to. Her mind was clearly reeling, trying to process the memories of the altered world she had been a part of, the atrocities she had reveled in, the things and creatures she had destroyed. I could see the horror and disgust written all over her face as she struggled to come to terms with what she had become. As she stood there, I could sense the turmoil brewing inside her. Her memories, once suppressed, were now flooding back, and with them, the weight of her guilt and shame. I knew I had to tread carefully, to help her find her way back to the person she once was. "Mari, look at me," I said gently, trying to bring her back to the present. She hesitated for a moment, then slowly turned her gaze back to mine. "You’re not that person anymore," I said, trying to offer some reassurance. "The power of the god of light has restored your mind, and we can work together to find a way to restore your body, to make things right." Mari's eyes searched mine, as if looking for any sign of deception, any hint that I was not telling her the truth. But all she saw was my genuine concern, my desire to help her. "How...how did I do those things?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. I hesitated, unsure of how to answer her. I knew that she had been under the control of the demon lord, that she had been used as a pawn in his game of power and destruction. But I also knew that she had reveled in the chaos and destruction, that she had enjoyed the power and the fear that came with it. "You were under a spell, a powerful magic that controlled your actions," I said finally, trying to find a way to explain the unexplainable. "You weren’t in control of your own actions, Mari. The demon lord manipulated you, used you for his own purposes." Mari's face contorted in a mixture of pain and anguish as she processed my words. She took a deep breath, and I could see her trying to come to terms with what she had done. "I...I remember," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "I remember the feeling of power, of invincibility. I remember the destruction, the chaos, the screams of the people..." Her voice trailed off, and she covered her face with her hands, overcome with emotion. I reached out, putting a gentle hand on her shoulder, trying to offer what little comfort I could. "It's going to be okay, Mari," I said softly. "We’ll face whatever comes next together. We’ll find a way to make things right, to restore your body and clear your name. You’re not alone in this."
