Chapter 9: Echoes of Uncertainty

Part 9

Three days had passed since the incident, and Ashley was finally granted movement privileges. She was allowed to be in her room without restraints, but a nurse was always present, watching over her 24/7. Today was one of those days when Ashley was allowed to participate in therapy, and as she stood up from her bed, she felt a mix of emotions: anxiety, fear, and a hint of determination. The nurse, Mrs. Thompson, smiled warmly and said, "Okay, Ashley, today we're going to work on some exercises. Let's get started, shall we?" Ashley nodded, her eyes fixed on the floor. She took a few tentative steps, and Mrs. Thompson followed closely behind her. As they walked out of the room, Ashley was greeted by two therapists, Dr. Lee and Dr. Patel. They smiled at her and introduced themselves, their expressions warm and professional. "Ashley, we're glad you're here today," Dr. Lee said. "We're going to do some evaluations, and then we'll talk about your progress." Ashley nodded, feeling a knot form in her stomach. The therapists led her to a small room with a table and chairs. They asked her to sit down, and Ashley complied, her hands clenched into fists. The therapists began to ask her questions, and Ashley answered as best she could. But it was when they asked for her age that the room fell silent. Dr. Lee's eyes widened in shock, and Dr. Patel's mouth dropped open. "You're 17?" Dr. Lee repeated, her voice incredulous. Ashley nodded, feeling a surge of nervousness. "Yes, I'm 17." The therapists exchanged a stunned glance, and Ashley could sense their shock. Dr. Patel leaned forward, her expression concerned. "Ashley, you're the youngest patient we've had here in a long time. We're going to have to re-evaluate your treatment plan." Ashley stood up, her heart racing. "Does my mom know it's happening today?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Mrs. Thompson, who had been quietly observing the scene, stepped forward. "I'll make sure to call your mom and let her know," she said gently. "But, Ashley, you need to understand that we're here to help you. We're going to do everything we can to make sure you're safe and healthy." Ashley nodded, feeling a mix of emotions: fear, uncertainty, and a deep-seated longing for her mom. She knew she was in a place where she didn't belong, surrounded by people who were trying to help her, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that she was losing control.
