Deteriorating Conditions
Part 4
As the days passed, Link's condition continued to deteriorate. At first, it was just a faint ringing in his ear, similar to Zelda's symptom. He tried to brush it off as a minor side effect, but Doctor Raymer was vigilant, taking note of the new development. The doctor's expression turned grave as he examined Link's ear with a specialized instrument, the soft glow of the infirmary's lanterns casting an eerie light on the young hero's pale face. "It's not just a ringing, Link," the doctor said, his voice low and serious, "it's a sign that the Ky'Resh illness is progressing. We need to monitor your condition closely." The doctor's words were laced with a sense of urgency, and Link couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. As the hours went by, Link began to experience sporadic episodes of nausea, his stomach churning with a queasy feeling that seemed to come out of nowhere. He would be sitting up in bed, chatting with Zelda or reading a book, when suddenly he would feel a wave of dizziness wash over him, followed by a violent bout of nausea. The smell of the infirmary's disinfectant seemed to intensify during these episodes, making Link's stomach turn even more. The nausea was bad enough, but it was nothing compared to the shortness of breath that began to plague him. Link would be walking from his bed to the bathroom, and suddenly he would feel like he was suffocating, his lungs burning with a desperate need for air. He would stumble and almost fall, gasping for breath like a man who had been underwater for too long. The sound of his own ragged breathing was like a scream in his ears, a harsh reminder of his own mortality. Zelda, on the other hand, was experiencing her own set of problems. At first, it was just a slight weakness in her legs, but as the days went by, she found it increasingly difficult to walk. Her legs would buckle under her, and she would have to catch herself on the bedframe or the doctor's arm. The feeling of her legs giving out from under her was terrifying, and Zelda couldn't help but wonder if she would ever regain her strength. Doctor Raymer was at a loss to explain why Zelda's symptoms were so different from Link's. He ran test after test, but the results all seemed to point to the same conclusion: that they had both contracted the same illness, but it was manifesting in different ways. The doctor's frustration was palpable, and Zelda couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as she watched him work. As the two friends lay in their adjacent beds, they couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. They were both getting sicker, and the doctor seemed powerless to stop it. The infirmary, once a place of hope and healing, now seemed like a prison, a place where they were trapped with a deadly illness that seemed to be getting the better of them. "Link?" Zelda said, her voice weak but concerned. "Do you think... do you think this is more than just an illness?" Her eyes were sunken, her skin pale, and Link could see the fear lurking in their depths. Link shook his head, but his eyes betrayed his doubt. "I don't know, Zelda," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I do know that we'll get through this, together." The words sounded hollow, even to his own ears, but he said them anyway, trying to reassure Zelda that everything would be okay. As he looked at Zelda, he could see the fear in her eyes, the uncertainty that had crept in like a thief in the night. He knew that he had to be strong for her, to be the rock that she needed. But as he lay back in his bed, feeling the weight of his own illness bearing down on him, he couldn't help but wonder if they would ever make it out of this alive.
