New Beginnings

Part 18

A month had passed since Pam and Doug's retreat to the cabin, and things were going exceptionally well. Pam had settled back into her routine at the hospital, and her colleagues had noticed a significant improvement in her demeanor. She was more confident, and her usual spark had returned. One day, as she was reviewing patient files, Mark called her into his office. "Pam, I wanted to talk to you about a new opportunity that's come up," he said, a smile on his face. "We're looking for someone to take over as case manager for the ER, and I think you'd be perfect for the job." Pam's eyes widened in surprise. "Me? Why me?" Mark nodded. "Your background in social work makes you uniquely qualified for this role. You've always had a knack for connecting with patients and understanding their needs. I think you'd excel in this position." Pam couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and pride. This was an opportunity she had been working towards for years, and she was eager to take on the challenge. "I'm interested," she said, trying to contain her enthusiasm. "When can I start?" Mark chuckled. "Let's discuss the details, but I'm thinking we can make it official next week. Congratulations, Pam. You deserve it." Pam beamed with pride as she left Mark's office. She couldn't wait to share the news with Doug. She headed home, eager to find him and tell him all about her new role. As she walked into the house, she found Doug in the living room with Emily, their young niece. Emily was giggling and chattering excitedly, and Doug was smiling and playing with her. Pam's heart swelled with love for her family, but she wasn't in the mood for small talk. She had news to share, and she wanted Doug's undivided attention. "Hey," she said, trying to sound casual, but her tone came out stiff. Doug looked up, noticing the seriousness in her expression. "Hey, what's up?" he asked, getting up from the couch to give her a hug. Pam pulled back, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on Emily. "Can we talk later?" she asked, her voice tight. Doug's expression changed, and he nodded. "Of course, what's going on?" But Pam just shook her head. "Not now. I'm going for a walk." As she turned to leave, Doug called out, "Pam, wait—" But Pam was already out the door, leaving Doug and Emily looking at each other in concern. Doug sighed and sat back down, trying to make sense of Pam's sudden withdrawal. What was going on?
