The Masks We Wear

Part 7

As Amari walked through the school hallways, she couldn't help but feel like she was wearing a mask. A mask of confidence and popularity, one that hid her true feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. She had always been the light-skinned girl with the curly hair and the crowd of admirers, but lately, she had started to feel like that wasn't really her. Nigee, on the other hand, was wearing a mask of his own. A mask of jokes and teasing, one that hid his true feelings of adoration and longing. He had always been the class clown, the one who made everyone laugh, but deep down, he was hurting. Hurting because he couldn't seem to get Amari's attention, hurting because he felt like he didn't fit in. As Amari walked into her math class, she caught Nigee looking at her. For a moment, they just stared at each other, and Amari felt a shiver run down her spine. She quickly looked away, telling herself that she was just being silly. But as the class went on, Amari couldn't help but sneak glances at Nigee. He was sitting across from her, his eyes fixed on the chalkboard as the teacher droned on. But every now and then, he would glance over at her, his eyes locking onto hers for a brief moment. Amari felt a flutter in her chest whenever their eyes met. It was a feeling she couldn't quite explain, a feeling that made her feel both excited and scared. She didn't know what to make of it, or what it meant. As the class ended and the students began to file out, Nigee caught up to her. "Hey, Amari," he said, falling into step beside her. "I saw that you were struggling in math class. Do you want me to help you with your homework?" Amari was taken aback. No one had ever offered to help her with her homework before, especially not Nigee. She looked at him skeptically, wondering if he was just trying to trick her. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that she hadn't seen before. It was kindness, and concern, and a genuine desire to help. For a moment, Amari felt a pang of uncertainty. Maybe she had misjudged Nigee. Maybe he wasn't as bad as she thought. "Okay," she said finally, taking a chance. "That would be great, thanks." Nigee grinned, looking pleased with himself. "I'll meet you at the library after school," he said. "We can work on your math homework together." As Amari walked away, she couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder. What was going on with Nigee? And why was she starting to see him in a different light? As she walked to her locker, Amari caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She was wearing her usual mask of confidence, but underneath, she was feeling uncertain and scared. She didn't know what to make of Nigee's sudden change of heart, or what it meant for their relationship. But as she looked deeper into her own eyes, she saw something there that she hadn't seen before. It was a glimmer of hope, a sense that maybe, just maybe, she had been wrong about Nigee all along. And as she walked away from the locker, Amari felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. She was starting to peel away the layers of her mask, to reveal the true person underneath. And she was starting to see that maybe, just maybe, Nigee was doing the same. The hallways were filled with the sound of laughter and chatter, but Amari felt like she was walking through a tunnel, one that was dark and uncertain. But as she walked, the tunnel began to brighten, and Amari felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, she was starting to see Nigee in a different light. And maybe, just maybe, he was starting to see her.
