Rebirth in Chaos

Part 17

Emma rushed out of her bedroom, her heart racing with a sense of dread as she had the feeling someone broke in. She called out, "Hello? Is anyone here?" but there was no response. As she entered the living room, she was met with a sight that made her freeze. Max was standing in the doorway, his eyes wide with shock and his face pale. He turned to her, and their eyes met in a moment of mutual disbelief. "Emma?" Max whispered, his voice trembling as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Emma looked just as shocked, her eyes scanning the room as if searching for something or someone. The air was thick with tension as Emma took in the scene before her. The room was in disarray, furniture overturned, and bloodstains marred the floor. She remembered the feeling of her life slipping away, the pain, and the darkness. But here she was, standing in her living room, face to face with Max. "How...how is this possible?" Max stuttered, taking a step forward as if to verify that she was indeed real. Emma's gaze drifted from Max to the bloodstains on the floor, and memories came flooding back. She recalled the agony of her death, the feeling of her body being torn apart. It was all so vivid, so real. But it wasn't real, was it? She was standing here, alive and breathing. Emma's eyes locked onto Max's, and she saw the same confusion and fear reflected back at her. "What's going on, Max?" Emma asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Max took another step forward, his eyes never leaving hers. "I came back to the cottage, and...and I found...I found you," Max said, his voice cracking. "You were...you were dead. I don't understand how you're standing here." Emma's mind reeled as she tried to make sense of it all. She remembered dying, remembered the pain and the darkness. But here she was, alive and standing in her living room. "I don't know," Emma said, her voice shaking. "I just woke up in my bed, hours later. I don't know what happened." Max's eyes scanned the room again, as if searching for answers. Emma followed his gaze, taking in the destruction around her. It was as if she had stepped into a nightmare, a nightmare that she couldn't wake up from. As they stood there, frozen in shock, Emma couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. Something didn't add up. And she couldn't help but wonder: what really happened while she was asleep?
