A Week of Unwelcome
Part 2
The days that followed were a blur of meals, conversations, and awkward encounters. Jay tried his best to fit in, but it was clear that not everyone was happy about his presence. Nick, in particular, seemed to resent Jay's arrival, often shooting him disapproving glances across the dinner table. Jay tried to brush it off, focusing instead on the kindness of Mrs. Birch and the genuine interest of Leah, who bombarded him with questions about his life. Judd, however, remained an enigma. His eyes seemed to bore into Jay, as if searching for something beneath the surface. Jay couldn't shake the feeling that Judd was waiting for him to slip up, to reveal some hidden truth about himself. Despite the unease Judd inspired, Jay tried to be friendly, engaging him in conversations about sports and music. Judd's responses were always brief, but Jay detected a flicker of interest behind his eyes. As the evening drew to a close, Jay found himself sitting on the couch, staring blankly at the TV. Leah plopped down beside him, a book clutched in her hand. "Hey, want to see my favorite book?" she asked, holding out the cover. Jay took it, running his fingers over the embossed letters. The title, "The Outsider", sent a shiver down his spine. As he flipped through the pages, Leah began to tell him about the story, her voice weaving a spell of wonder. Nick slumped into the armchair across from them, his eyes fixed on his phone. "You really like that stuff, Leah?" he asked, his tone dismissive. Leah's face fell, but she quickly recovered, launching into a passionate defense of the book. Jay listened, entranced, as the debate between siblings escalated. The argument ended abruptly when Judd strode into the room, his eyes locked on Jay. "Hey, kid, want to see something cool?" he asked, a sly grin spreading across his face. Jay hesitated, unsure of what to expect, but his curiosity got the better of him. He followed Judd out into the backyard, the darkness swallowing them whole. The air was heavy with the scent of blooming flowers and fresh-cut grass. Jay's eyes adjusted slowly to the darkness, and he made out the shape of Judd's workshop in the distance. Judd pushed open the creaky door, revealing a cluttered space filled with strange contraptions and half-built projects. Jay's eyes widened as Judd led him to a workbench, where a sleek, black motorcycle gleamed in the moonlight. "Wow," Jay breathed, running his hand over the bike's curves. Judd's eyes sparkled with pride. "I built this myself," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "Want to take it for a spin?" Jay's heart skipped a beat as he considered the offer. He had never ridden a motorcycle before, but something about Judd's intensity drew him in. He nodded, and Judd handed him a helmet, his eyes glinting with a challenge. As Jay settled onto the bike, he felt a rush of adrenaline course through his veins. The wind whipped through his hair as they sped down the driveway, the darkness blurring around them. For a moment, Jay forgot about the complicated web of relationships and expectations that had been weighing him down. All that mattered was the rush of the ride, the wind in his face, and the enigmatic presence of Judd Birch beside him. But as they roared back into the driveway, Jay caught sight of Nick and Leah watching from the porch, their faces etched with concern. Jay felt a pang of unease, wondering what other secrets Judd might be hiding, and what lay in store for him during his week-long stay with the Birchs.
