"Fears and Fears"
Part 5
Ashley woke up to a typical Tuesday morning, or so she thought. As she rolled over and swung her legs over the side of the bed, she felt a sharp pang in her lower abdomen. At first, she brushed it off as a minor cramp, but as the pain persisted, she began to feel a sense of unease. She glanced over at Alev, who was still fast asleep, and didn't want to disturb him. But as she stood up to use the bathroom, she noticed that she was spotting. A few droplets of blood on her underwear made her heart skip a beat. She had been experiencing a normal pregnancy so far, and the thought of anything going wrong sent a wave of panic through her body. Ashley quickly got dressed and woke Alev up. "Hey, I need to talk to you about something," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. Alev rubbed the sleep from his eyes and sat up. "What's wrong?" he asked, noticing the concern etched on Ashley's face. "I've been having some cramps, and I'm spotting," Ashley said, her voice barely above a whisper. Alev's expression turned serious. "Let's go to the hospital," he said, already getting out of bed. They quickly grabbed their things and headed to the hospital, Ashley's mind racing with worst-case scenarios. As they arrived at the emergency room, Ashley was immediately taken in by a nurse. "Can you tell me more about your symptoms?" the nurse asked, her eyes scanning Ashley's chart. Ashley explained the cramps and spotting, and the nurse nodded sympathetically. "We'll get you seen by a doctor right away," she said. After what felt like an eternity, a doctor came in to see Ashley. "I'm Dr. Patel," she said with a warm smile. "I understand you're experiencing some cramping and spotting. Can you tell me more about it?" Ashley explained her symptoms again, and Dr. Patel nodded thoughtfully. "I'm going to do an ultrasound and see what's going on," she said. Ashley's heart was racing as she waited for the results. Alev held her hand, trying to reassure her that everything would be okay. The ultrasound technician came in and began to examine Ashley's abdomen. After a few minutes, Dr. Patel returned with a concerned look on her face. "Ashley, I'm seeing some bleeding in your uterus," she said gently. "It's possible that you're experiencing a miscarriage." Ashley's world went dark. She felt like she was floating above her body, unable to process the news. Alev's grip on her hand tightened, and she could feel his fear radiating through his body. "What does this mean?" Ashley asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Dr. Patel's expression was sympathetic. "We'll need to run some more tests to confirm, but it's possible that the pregnancy isn't viable. We'll do everything we can to support you and Alev through this." Ashley felt like her heart was shattering into a million pieces. She and Alev had been so excited to start their journey as parents, and now it seemed like that dream might be slipping away from them.
