The Missing Link Connection

Part 3

As we walked, Elizabeth, or Link as she seemed to know herself, revealed more about her past and her connection to the disappearances. "My name is actually Elizabeth," she said with a sly smile, "and I've been tracking the disappearances of people named Link. It's quite fascinating, really." I couldn't help but notice the glint in her eye, a spark of mischief that seemed to fuel her curiosity. We walked in silence for a moment, the only sound being the rustling of leaves beneath our feet. I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that she knew me, or at least, knew my name. "So, Link... or Elizabeth," I started, trying to sound casual, "what makes you think we're connected to these disappearances?" Elizabeth's grin grew wider. "Well, Iris, it's quite simple really. When someone named Link goes missing, they're quite literally a missing link. It's almost... poetic, don't you think?" She chuckled to herself, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her perspective. "I suppose," I said, "but what do you know about the disappearances?" "Oh, I know a thing or two," she said, her eyes sparkling with a knowing glint. "I've been researching, and it seems that every single individual named Link who has gone missing has a connection to a different universe or reality. There's Link from Hyrule, of course, but also Link from the Legend of Zelda series, Link from the Mario franchise... even a Link from a sci-fi novel I stumbled upon." She rattled off the names with an ease that sent a shiver down my spine. "There's also Link Neal from the YouTube channel Vsauce, Link from the TV show 'The Inbetweeners', and even a Link from a South Korean boy band. The list goes on and on." As we turned a corner, I noticed a group of people gathered around a street performer. He was dressed as Link from Hyrule, and I felt a pang of unease. This was getting too close to home. Elizabeth noticed my gaze and followed it to the performer. "Ah, yes. The universes are bleeding into each other. It's as if the fabric of reality is unraveling, and we're the only ones who can see it." I felt a chill run down my spine as she spoke. There was something about her that seemed... off. A knowing glint in her eye that made me wonder if she was somehow connected to the disappearances. "Tell me, Iris," she said, her voice low and mysterious, "do you think it's just a coincidence that I'm here, talking to you, when all these Links are disappearing?" I hesitated, unsure of how to respond. There was something about Elizabeth that seemed... calculated. As if she knew more than she was letting on. "You're not... involved in this, are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. Elizabeth's smile grew wider, and she leaned in close. "Involved? Maybe. But I assure you, Iris, I'm just a concerned observer. For now." The way she said it, with a hint of mischief in her voice, made me wonder if I was just a pawn in her game. Was she the one responsible for the disappearances? And if so, why was she telling me all this? As we continued walking, I couldn't shake the feeling that Elizabeth was hiding something from me. And I was determined to find out what it was. "So, Elizabeth," I said, trying to sound casual, "what do you plan to do with this information?" She turned to me, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. "I plan to find out why all these Links are disappearing. And I think you should join me." I hesitated, unsure of what to do. But something about her words resonated with me. Maybe it was the thrill of the mystery, or maybe it was the fact that she seemed to know more than she was letting on. Whatever the reason, I knew I had to trust her. For now.
