A Step Forward
Part 15
Ashley took a deep breath, her eyes fixed on Dominic as she steeled herself for another attempt. She looked down at her legs, her mind focused on the task at hand. With a quiet determination, she shifted her weight onto her right leg, her muscles trembling with effort. And then, with a burst of courage, she lifted her left leg off the bed. For a moment, she was standing on one leg, her balance precarious. But then, with a jolt of pain, her left leg touched the floor. Ashley's eyes widened as she felt a searing pain shoot through her leg, her muscles screaming in protest. She cried out, her body trembling with shock. Tears streamed down her face as she looked up at Dominic, her eyes pleading for help. Dominic's face was etched with concern, but he didn't move. He just stood there, his eyes locked on hers, offering her a sense of calm. Ashley took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. She looked down at her leg, feeling a wave of despair wash over her. She had taken a step, but it had been so hard. And the pain... oh, the pain was unbearable. Dominic moved forward, his arms wrapping around her waist as he held her steady. "It's okay, Ashley," he whispered, his voice soft and soothing. "You did it. You took a step." The nurse, who had been quietly observing from the corner of the room, moved forward. "Let me help her," she said, her voice gentle. "We need to get her into a position where she can rest her leg." Together, Dominic and the nurse helped Ashley onto a nearby chair, her leg stretched out in front of her. The nurse gently examined her leg, her hands probing for any signs of injury. "You did great," she said, smiling. "But we need to be careful. We don't want to overdo it." Ashley looked up at Dominic, her eyes still streaming with tears. He smiled, his eyes filled with encouragement. "You did it," he repeated, his voice filled with pride. "You took a step." The nurse handed Ashley a pillow, which she placed under her leg. As she settled into the chair, Ashley felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her. But it was a good kind of exhaustion, the kind that came from knowing she had pushed herself to the limit. She looked up at Dominic, her eyes locking onto his. "I did it," she whispered, a small smile playing on her lips. Dominic smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You sure did," he said, his voice filled with pride. "And I'm right here to help you take the next one."
