Echoes in the Dark

Part 34

The train rumbled on, a metal beast devouring the tunnels, as Taehyun's mind wandered back to Yeonjun. He replayed their conversation, the gentle touch of Yeonjun's lips, and the warmth of his eyes. The memory of their kiss lingered, a pleasant ache that refused to subside. As he stood there, lost in thought, the train slowed to a stop, and the doors slid open with a soft hiss. Taehyun stepped out into the crowded station, merging with the sea of people rushing to and fro. The fluorescent lights overhead cast an artificial glow, making him feel like a ghost drifting through the city. He navigated the maze of corridors, his feet carrying him on autopilot to his apartment. The familiar routine felt hollow, like he was going through the motions. As he unlocked the door, a sense of desolation washed over him. The apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt like a prison. He dropped his keys on the counter, the sound echoing through the silence. The TV, still on from the previous night, cast a flickering glow over the room. Taehyun changed into comfortable clothes, his movements mechanical, and flopped onto the couch. The emptiness was suffocating, a heavy blanket that smothered him. He reached for his phone, the screen glowing with an array of notifications. A text from his friend, Minsoo, popped up, inviting him to a game night. Taehyun hesitated, unsure if he was in the mood for socializing. Another message from an unknown number caught his eye: "Meet me at the rooftop bar at 10 pm. I have a story to tell." Taehyun's curiosity was piqued. Who could be sending him mysterious messages? He typed out a response, agreeing to meet the stranger. The minutes ticked by, and before he knew it, the clock struck 10 pm. He grabbed his jacket and headed out, the city lights beckoning him like a siren's call. The rooftop bar was a short walk from his apartment, nestled in the heart of the city. As he ascended the stairs, the sounds of the bar grew louder – laughter, music, and clinking glasses. The bouncer gave him a nod, and Taehyun stepped into the vibrant atmosphere. The view of the city skyline took his breath away, the lights twinkling like stars. He scanned the crowd, searching for the mysterious texter. A figure stood at the edge of the bar, hood up, blending into the shadows. Taehyun's heart skipped a beat as the figure turned, revealing a familiar face. It was Joon, a friend from his college days, who had drifted out of his life after graduation. "Taehyun," Joon said, his voice barely audible over the music. "It's been a while." Taehyun's eyes narrowed, a mix of emotions swirling inside him. What was Joon doing here, and what story did he have to tell? As he made his way through the crowd, Taehyun felt a sense of trepidation, unsure what the night had in store for him.
