A Delicate Balance
Part 2
Mia's chatter and clanging of pots and pans filled the air as she played in the living room, her bright smile a stark contrast to the concerned expression on Ashley's face. Leo, engrossed in his puzzle, seemed oblivious at first, but as Mia's noise level escalated, his body began to tense. Ashley watched with a practiced eye, ready to intervene if needed. As Mia banged on a drum, Leo's hands started to flap, and his eyes darted towards his sister. Ashley quickly got up from the kitchen table and walked over to Mia. "Hey, sweetie, let's find a quieter toy to play with, okay?" she said, trying to distract Mia from the drum. But Mia was in the midst of a creative spree, and she resisted letting go of the drum. "No!" she exclaimed, her voice rising. Leo's flapping intensified, and he let out a soft "stop." Ashley's heart sank as she realized that Mia's noise was triggering one of Leo's meltdowns. Jed, who had been working from home, walked into the living room, sensing the tension. "What's going on?" he asked, his eyes scanning the scene. Ashley nodded towards Leo, who was now on the verge of a full-blown meltdown. Jed quickly swooped in, gently taking the drum away from Mia. "Let's find something else to play with, kiddo," he said, his voice calm and soothing. Mia pouted but eventually let go of the drum, and Jed handed her a soft, quiet toy. As the noise level decreased, Leo's flapping slowed, and he took a deep breath. Ashley breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for Jed's quick intervention. "Thanks, babe," she said, smiling at him. Jed smiled back and handed Ashley a cup of coffee that he had freshly brewed. "You're welcome," he said. "I'll take Mia outside for a bit, and you can focus on Leo, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Jed. As he took Mia outside, Ashley sat down next to Leo and put a gentle hand on his shoulder. "It's okay, buddy," she said. "I'm here for you." Leo looked up at her, his eyes still a bit glassy, but his face slowly relaxed. Ashley smiled and handed him a puzzle piece. "Let's finish your puzzle, okay?" Leo nodded, and together they worked on the puzzle, the calm atmosphere a welcome respite from the earlier chaos. Ashley couldn't help but think about the delicate balance they had to maintain, ensuring that both Leo and Mia received the attention and care they needed. It was a challenge, but with Jed by her side, she felt more confident that they could navigate the complexities of their growing family.
