"A Duet of Embarrassment"

Part 141

"Fine," I say, my voice barely above a whisper, as I realize I'm trapped into this humiliating situation. I want to crawl in a hole and die as Sera drags me towards the makeshift stage in the center of the room, where a microphone and a guitar are waiting for us. Shinso, who's been watching our exchange with a smug grin on his face, saunters over to join us, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "This should be good," he says, taking a seat on the couch, his eyes fixed on us with anticipation. Sera gives me a triumphant smile, clearly enjoying my misery. "Don't worry, it'll be fun," she says, trying to reassure me, but I can tell she's secretly reveling in my embarrassment. I take a deep breath, trying to steel myself for the impending humiliation. The song in question is a cheesy love ballad that's been stuck in my head all week, and I know that Sera has deliberately chosen it to torture me. As we take our places at the microphone, Sera starts strumming the guitar, and I can feel my face burning with embarrassment. I glance over at Shinso, who's trying to stifle a grin, and feel a surge of mortification. The music starts, and Sera launches into the song, her voice warbling off-key as she sings about love and heartbreak. I try to join in, but my voice catches in my throat, and I end up sounding like a dying cat. Shinso bursts out laughing, and I can feel my face growing even hotter with embarrassment. Sera, on the other hand, seems to be enjoying herself, singing with increasing gusto as she prances around the stage. I try to follow her lead, but my voice is shaking, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to pass out from embarrassment. The lyrics seem to be getting progressively more ridiculous, and I'm mortified that I'm actually singing them out loud. As we reach the climax of the song, Sera grabs my hand, and we're both belting out the lyrics at the top of our lungs. I'm pretty sure that everyone in the room can hear us, and I'm convinced that I'm going to die of embarrassment. But then, something unexpected happens. Shinso gets up from the couch, and starts dancing along to the music, his eyes shining with amusement. Sera and I exchange a glance, and for a moment, we forget about our embarrassment, and just let go, laughing and singing along to the ridiculous song. As we finish the final chorus, the room erupts into applause, and I feel a wave of relief wash over me. Maybe, just maybe, this embarrassing moment won't be the end of the world after all.
