Chapter 3: The Trail of Uncertainty
Part 3
As they made their way to lab 3B, Korra's anxiety continued to build, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Mako noticed her tension and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Hey, we'll find out what's going on," he said, his voice calm and soothing. "Asami's a smart and resourceful person. I'm sure she's fine." Korra nodded, trying to draw on Mako's confidence, but her unease lingered. They turned a corner and came face to face with a sleek, silver elevator. The doors slid open with a soft whoosh, and Korra stepped inside, followed by Mako. The elevator ride was short, and soon they found themselves standing in front of a large glass door with a sign that read "Lab 3B". Korra pushed open the door, and they stepped inside. The lab was a hive of activity, with scientists and engineers working at various stations, surrounded by rows of high-tech equipment. A bespectacled man with a kind face and a mop of gray hair looked up from his work, noticing Korra and Mako's arrival. "Ah, you must be here to see me," he said, rising from his seat. "I'm Dr. Zhang. The receptionist said you were looking for information about Asami Sato?" Korra nodded, her eyes locking onto Dr. Zhang's. "That's right. We were told you had a meeting with her yesterday. Did she say anything unusual before she... didn't show up?" Dr. Zhang's expression turned thoughtful. "Now that you mention it, she did seem a bit... preoccupied. She arrived early, but her mind seemed elsewhere. She kept glancing at her watch and muttering to herself." Mako leaned forward, his interest piqued. "Did she say what was on her mind?" Dr. Zhang shook his head. "No, I'm afraid not. But she did ask me about access to certain... restricted areas of the lab." Korra's ears perked up. "Restricted areas? What kind of areas?" Dr. Zhang hesitated, glancing around the lab nervously. "Well, I'm not sure I should be sharing this information. But... I think it's possible Asami may have been investigating some of our more... experimental projects." Korra's eyes narrowed. "Experimental projects? What kind of projects?" Dr. Zhang leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I'm not sure I should be telling you this, but... I think Asami may have stumbled into something she wasn't supposed to see." Korra's grip on her staff tightened. She had a feeling that they were getting close to something, and she was determined to uncover the truth. "What do you mean?" she pressed, her voice firm. Dr. Zhang glanced around the lab nervously, as if afraid of being overheard. "I think it's best if I show you," he said, leading them to a secure console on the far side of the lab. "But please, you have to promise me you'll be careful. If Asami did stumble into something she wasn't supposed to see... well, let's just say she may be in more danger than we think."
