Healing Scars
Part 26
Two years had passed since that emotional reunion in the hospital conference room. Ashley's life had undergone a significant transformation since then. With her mother's help, she had continued to heal from the physical and emotional wounds of her past. The counseling and therapy had been instrumental in helping her cope with the trauma she had endured. Ashley now lived with her mother in a cozy little house by the beach, a place she had grown to love. She had started taking classes at a local community college, pursuing a degree in psychology with the goal of helping others who had gone through similar experiences. Her mother had been her rock, supporting her every step of the way. As Ashley sat on the beach, watching the sunset with her mother by her side, she felt a sense of peace wash over her. The scars on her body had healed, but the emotional ones still lingered. She had learned to live with them, to manage the anxiety and the nightmares that still occasionally crept in. Her mother took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "You know, Ashley, I've been thinking," she said, her eyes fixed on the horizon. "I've been wanting to tell you something, but I wasn't sure if it was the right time." Ashley turned to her, curiosity etched on her face. "What is it, Mom?" she asked, her voice soft. Her mother took a deep breath before speaking. "I've been thinking about Kody," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been thinking about how he hurt you, about how he controlled you. And I've been thinking about forgiveness." Ashley's grip on her mother's hand tightened. She had thought about Kody too, about the pain he had inflicted on her. She had thought about forgiveness, but it was a complicated thing. "I know it's not easy, sweetie," her mother said, as if reading Ashley's thoughts. "But I've come to realize that forgiveness doesn't mean what he did was okay. It means that I'm letting go of the anger and the hurt. It means I'm choosing to move forward, to heal." Ashley looked at her mother, seeing the sincerity in her eyes. She knew that her mother was right. Forgiveness was a journey, one that she was willing to embark on. She nodded, a sense of resolve settling within her. As the sun dipped below the horizon, Ashley felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She knew that she still had a long way to go, but with her mother by her side, she felt ready to face whatever came next.
