**New Student in Town**

Part 1

I stepped out of the car and onto the familiar asphalt of Mystic Falls High School's parking lot. The sun was shining, and the smell of freshly cut grass filled the air. It was a typical day in the small town of Mystic Falls, where everyone knew each other's business. I took a deep breath, preparing myself for another year of high school. My parents, as usual, were on the move, chasing after some supernatural creature that threatened to destroy the world. They owned several businesses, including a hunting gear store and a security firm, which kept them busy and often away from home. My brother, Michael, was supposed to be home for the summer, but he had left without a word eighteen years ago, and I had given up on ever seeing him again. As a member of a long line of vampire hunters, I had grown up hearing stories about the supernatural creatures that roamed the world. My family had been hunters for centuries, and it was a tradition that I was expected to follow. My parents had always taught me that vampires, werewolves, and witches were evil and needed to be eliminated. I had always believed them, until I met Elena, Bonnie, and Caroline in elementary school. They had become my closest friends, and over the years, I had learned to see the supernatural world in a different light. My parents had dropped me off at school, as they had to attend to some "urgent" business. I grabbed my backpack and joined the sea of students flowing into the school building. As I walked through the crowded hallway, I noticed a group of students staring at someone. I followed their gaze and saw a boy with piercing blue eyes and chiseled features. He looked...different. There was something about him that seemed...off. I shook my head, focusing on my schedule for the day. I had first period English, and I was already running late. As I rushed down the hallway, I didn't notice the boy standing in front of me. I collided with him, and my books went flying out of my hands. "Oh no, I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed, bending down to pick up my scattered books. The boy knelt down beside me, his eyes locking onto mine. "It's okay, I'm fine," he said, his voice low and smooth. As we stood up, I noticed a small scratch on his cheek. "You're bleeding," I said, reaching out to touch the scratch. He caught my hand, his fingers wrapping around mine. "It's just a scratch," he said, smiling. I felt a jolt of electricity at his touch, but quickly pulled my hand back. "I'm Kris," I said, trying to sound casual. "I'm Stefan," he replied, his eyes crinkling at the corners. As we stood there, I noticed a group of students staring at us. One of them, a tall, dark-haired boy, looked particularly hostile. "Well, well, well, look what we have here," he sneered. Stefan's eyes narrowed, and he stepped forward. "Damon, leave her alone," he said, his voice low and menacing. I raised an eyebrow. Who was this Damon guy, and why was he so hostile towards Stefan? I turned to Stefan and said, "It's okay, I can handle myself." But Stefan just smiled and said, "I think I'll stick around." The dark-haired boy, Damon, snorted and walked away, muttering under his breath. I watched him go, feeling a sense of unease. Who were these boys, and what was their story? I turned to Stefan and asked, "So, are you new here?" Stefan nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. "Yeah, I just moved here from...elsewhere." I raised an eyebrow. "Elsewhere?" I repeated. Stefan smiled, and for a moment, I saw a glimmer of something in his eyes. Something that looked almost like...pain. "Let's just say I'm from a different part of the country," he said, his voice light. I nodded, sensing that there was more to Stefan's story than he was letting on. And I had a feeling that I was going to find out.
