"A Moment of Overwhelm"

Part 77

As Alex's face scrunched up in thought, Ashley could see the excitement and happiness building up inside him, but it was quickly replaced by a look of confusion and frustration. He looked at Ashley, his eyes wide and sparkling, but he didn't say anything. Instead, he just opened his mouth and let out a loud, piercing scream. Ashley's heart sank as she realized that Alex was having a meltdown. The cafe around them fell silent, with all eyes on Ashley and Alex. Ashley felt a wave of self-consciousness wash over her, as if she was a bad mom who couldn't even control her own child. She tried to apologize to the people around them, but Alex's tantrum only grew louder and more intense. He started to thrash about in his seat, his arms and legs flailing wildly as he screamed and cried. Ashley quickly grabbed his favorite toy, the squishy ball, and tried to calm him down, but it only seemed to make things worse. Alex ripped the ball out of her hands and threw it across the table, shattering a glass of water in the process. The cafe patrons gasped in shock and horror, and Ashley felt like she was going to die from embarrassment. She tried to stay calm, speaking softly to Alex and trying to reassure him that everything was okay, but it was no use. Alex was beyond reason, and Ashley was at her wit's end. She didn't know what to do, or how to make him calm down. All she could do was sit there, feeling like a failure as a mother, and hope that the tantrum would eventually pass. As the minutes ticked by, Ashley felt like she was going to lose her mind. The stares of the cafe patrons were burning a hole in her skin, and she just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. She glanced around, hoping to find some support or understanding, but all she saw were disapproving looks and whispered conversations. Just when she thought things couldn't get any worse, Alex's tantrum reached new heights. He stood up on his chair, his eyes blazing with a mixture of excitement and frustration, and let out a ear-piercing shriek. The cafe patrons covered their ears, and Ashley felt like she was going to collapse from embarrassment. She didn't know how much more of this she could take.
