Chapter 5: Under the Influence
Part 5
As I stumbled back into the house, the screen door creaking shut behind me, I couldn't help but feel the effects of the blunt still lingering in my system. The room seemed to spin slightly, and I had to grab onto the counter for support. I took a deep breath, trying to clear my head, and focused on the task at hand – preparing the drinks and snacks for the adults. I made my way to the kitchen, flipping on the lights and wincing at the brightness. The countertops seemed to gleam in the fluorescent light, and I felt a sudden urge to make everything perfect. I started by gathering the various bottles of liquor, mixers, and garnishes, arranging them neatly on the counter. The glassware sparkled in the cabinet, and I carefully set out the cups, glasses, and mugs. As I worked, my mind wandered back to the scene outside. The warmth of the summer evening, the laughter and conversation, and Adrian's piercing gaze all swirled together in my thoughts. I felt a flutter in my chest, and my hands moved a little more slowly as I worked. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to change, that this night was going to be more than just a casual gathering. The music from outside grew louder, and I could hear the sound of laughter and chatter carrying through the open windows. I smiled to myself, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. This was what I loved about these gatherings – the sense of community, the feeling of being surrounded by people who cared about me. As I finished setting out the drinks, I moved on to preparing the snacks. I arranged the chips, dips, and finger foods on a large platter, trying to make everything look appealing. The smell of burgers and hot dogs wafted in from outside, making my stomach growl with hunger. I popped a few crackers into my mouth, savoring the salty flavor as I worked. Just as I was finishing up, Alaina poked her head into the kitchen. "Hey, cuz, need any help?" she asked, her eyes scanning the spread I'd laid out. I shook my head, feeling a little more confident now that I'd had a chance to sober up a bit. "Nope, I think I've got everything covered. But thanks for offering!" Alaina smiled and nodded. "Okay, cool. I'm going to go grab a drink, then." As she headed back outside, I took a deep breath and surveyed my handiwork. The drinks and snacks looked great, and I felt a sense of pride at having pulled everything together. I took a moment to grab a glass of water for myself, feeling the cool liquid slide down my throat. The buzz from the blunt was still there, but I was starting to feel more grounded. With a sense of satisfaction, I headed back outside to join the party. The music was louder, and the laughter more raucous. I scanned the crowd, my eyes landing on Adrian's familiar face. He caught my eye and smiled, and I felt that flutter in my chest again. It was going to be a long night.
