A Web of Deception

Part 7

As the main course was finished and the conversation began to wind down, Lucius Malfoy leaned back in his chair, a satisfied smile spreading across his face. He signaled to the servant, who promptly cleared the table and brought in a tray of decadent-looking desserts. Snape, seemingly uninterested in the sweets, pushed back his chair and stood up, his eyes locked on Hermione. "Shall we retire to the living room?" he suggested, his voice low and smooth. "The fire is burning well, and we can continue our conversation in more comfortable surroundings." Lucius Malfoy stood up as well, his movements fluid and controlled, and offered Hermione his arm. "May I have the pleasure of escorting you, Miss Granger?" he asked, his eyes glinting with amusement. Hermione took a deep breath and placed her hand on his arm, feeling a flutter of unease as he led her out of the dining room. The living room was a grand, high-ceilinged space with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto a beautifully manicured garden. A roaring fire crackled in the hearth, casting a warm glow over the room. As they sat down, Lucius Malfoy turned to her, his eyes locked on hers. "Tell me, Miss Granger," he said, his voice low and husky. "What do you think of us? Do you find us...attractive?" Snape, who had been sitting down beside them, raised an eyebrow, his eyes glinting with interest. Hermione felt her face grow hot as she met Lucius Malfoy's gaze, her heart racing with surprise. She had not expected such a blunt question, and she wasn't sure how to respond. "I...I suppose that's a matter of personal opinion," she stammered, trying to deflect the question. Lucius Malfoy chuckled, a low, menacing sound. "Ah, but I think it's a question that deserves a straight answer, don't you, Miss Granger?" he pressed, his eyes locked on hers. Snape, seemingly uninterested in the conversation, stood up and walked over to the fire, his back to them. Hermione felt a surge of gratitude towards him, but she knew she had to respond to Lucius Malfoy's question. "I think," she said slowly, trying to choose her words carefully, "that you both have...certain qualities that might be considered attractive by some people." Lucius Malfoy laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "Ah, diplomatic as ever, Miss Granger," he said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "But I think we can both agree that you're not just talking about our...physical appearance, are you?" Hermione felt a shiver run down her spine as she met Lucius Malfoy's gaze, a sense of foreboding settling in the pit of her stomach. She knew that she had to tread carefully, for in this game of cat and mouse, one wrong move could have disastrous consequences.
