Fading Light

Part 16

Three weeks had passed since the doctor's ominous prediction, and Ashley's condition had taken a drastic turn for the worse. The chemotherapy that had once offered a glimmer of hope had been discontinued, and Ashley was now reliant on morphine to manage her excruciating pain. She was bed-bound, her once-vibrant skin now pale and clammy, her frail body sustained by a feeding tube and a catheter to drain her urine. Her mother had become her primary caregiver, devotedly feeding her, washing her, and changing her daily. The roles had reversed, and Ashley's mother was now her rock, her lifeline. Ender, Ashley's four-year-old son, was the only spark of joy in this bleak landscape. He would often lie beside his mother, watching cartoons or playing with his toys, oblivious to the gravity of the situation. On this particular day, Ender was engrossed in an episode of Bluey, his eyes glued to the screen as he lay on the bed beside Ashley. She smiled weakly, her eyes sunken, but her heart full of love for her little boy. Susan entered the room, her expression a mix of compassion and concern. She began to connect Ashley's feeding tube, her hands moving with a practiced ease. As she finished, she handed Ashley her pain medication and a glass of water. "Here you go, Ash," she said softly. "Drink this, and try to rest." Ashley took the medication, her hand trembling as she raised the glass to her lips. But as she began to drink, a sudden coughing fit seized her, and she started to panic. Her eyes widened, and she struggled to breathe. Susan quickly sprang into action, helping Ashley sit up and propping her against a stack of pillows. "Easy, Ash, easy," she soothed, holding Ashley's hand. Ashley's coughing subsided, replaced by ragged gasps for air. Susan stroked her hair, trying to calm her down. "You're okay, Ash. I'm here. Just breathe." As Ashley's breathing slowly steadied, Ender looked up from the screen, his big brown eyes filled with worry. "Mommy?" he whispered, his small voice trembling. Ashley forced a weak smile, trying to reassure him. "I'm okay, baby," she whispered back, her voice barely audible. Susan helped Ashley lie back down, adjusting her pillows and blankets to make her comfortable. As she worked, Ashley closed her eyes, feeling a deep sense of gratitude towards her friend. She knew she couldn't have made it this far without Susan by her side. As the episode of Bluey ended, Ender snuggled up close to Ashley, his small body a warm presence against her frail form. Ashley wrapped her arms around him, holding him tight, and let the tears fall, silently mourning the life she was losing, and the time she would never get back with her precious son.
