"A Desperate Measure"

Part 10

Five days had passed since Ashley's therapy session, and the atmosphere around her had grown increasingly tense. The therapists and nurses had been whispering to each other in hushed tones, and Ashley could sense that a decision had been made. Today, Mrs. Thompson entered her room with a somber expression, accompanied by Dr. Lee and Dr. Patel. "Ashley, we've been discussing your treatment plan, and we've decided that it's time to try a different approach," Dr. Lee said gently. "We think that Electroconvulsive Therapy, or ECT, would be the best option for you." Ashley's eyes widened in fear as she processed the words. She had heard of ECT, but she had never thought it would be considered for her. "What does it mean?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. Dr. Patel took a deep breath before explaining. "ECT is a treatment that uses electrical impulses to stimulate the brain. It can help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other conditions. We'll be using it to try and help you manage your emotions and improve your mental health." Ashley felt a wave of anxiety wash over her as she thought about the procedure. She had always been afraid of the unknown, and this seemed like a daunting and scary experience. As the nurses and therapists began to prepare her for the treatment, Ashley's mind wandered to her mom. "Does my mom know?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Mrs. Thompson nodded reassuringly. "Yes, Ashley, your mom has been informed about the decision. She's aware that ECT is being considered, and she's given her consent." Ashley felt a pang of sadness and worry. She wished her mom was there to hold her hand, to reassure her that everything would be okay. But she was alone, surrounded by strangers in white coats. The nurses led her to a small room with a specialized chair in the center. It looked like a regular chair, but Ashley could see that it had been modified with straps and electrodes. As they helped her sit down, Ashley felt her heart racing. The nurse began to strap her in, securing her wrists and ankles. Ashley closed her eyes, trying to calm herself down, but her mind was racing with thoughts of fear and uncertainty. Dr. Lee's voice was calm and reassuring as she explained the procedure, but Ashley couldn't shake off the feeling that she was in for something terrifying. The machines began to beep, and Ashley felt a surge of electricity run through her body. As the electrodes were placed on her temples, Ashley's eyes snapped open. She looked up at the nurse and asked again, her voice shaking. "Does my mom know?" The nurse smiled kindly and replied, "Yes, Ashley, your mom is on her way here. She'll be here soon." The machine beeped loudly, and Ashley closed her eyes, bracing herself for what was to come.
