A Day of Uncertainty
Part 2
As Liesl skipped away, Fraulein Maria couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation about the day ahead. Her cold was starting to get the better of her, and she wasn't sure if she was up to tackling a fun-filled day of outings with the Von Trapp children. But she was determined to make the best of it, and so she finished her tea and toast, and began to make her way to the nursery to start getting the children ready. As she entered the nursery, she was greeted by the sight of the seven Von Trapp children, all chattering excitedly and dressed in their Sunday best. There was Liesl, the eldest, who was busy helping her siblings get their coats and hats on. Next to her stood Friedrich, the responsible and serious one, who was making sure everyone had their gloves and scarves. Then there was Louisa, the mischievous one, who was always getting into trouble. Kurt, the charming and flirtatious one, was busy trying to impress his sisters with his best "dashing" poses. Brigitta, the clever and sharp-tongued one, was reading a book and ignoring the commotion around her. Marta, the sweet and gentle one, was helping her younger sister, Gretl, get her dress on. "Good morning, Kinder!" Fraulein Maria said, trying to sound enthusiastic despite her aching body. "Today is going to be a wonderful day, I just know it! We're going to go on a picnic in the park, and then maybe take a walk along the lake. Who's excited?" The children all cheered and chattered excitedly, except for Brigitta, who raised her hand and said, "Fraulein Maria, shouldn't you be resting today? You don't sound very well." Fraulein Maria smiled weakly. "I'm fine, Brigitta, really. I just need to get some fresh air and I'll be right as rain." But as they set off towards the park, Fraulein Maria couldn't shake the feeling that she was making a mistake. The cold air and damp mist seemed to be seeping into her bones, making her shiver and ache all over. She tried to hide it from the children, but she could feel her energy flagging. As they arrived at the park, Fraulein Maria suggested they find a nice spot to lay out the picnic blanket. But as they were setting up, Fraulein Maria's throat began to tickle again, and she felt another sneeze building up inside her. "Excuse me, Kinder," she said, turning away and blowing her nose on her handkerchief. But just as she was turning back to the children, she saw a figure approaching them across the park. It was Captain Von Trapp, looking dashing in his uniform and smiling at her with a warmth in his eyes. "Fraulein Maria, I see you're bravely soldiering on despite your illness," he said, his voice low and gentle. "But perhaps I can persuade you to take a break and let me take over for the day?" Fraulein Maria felt a surge of gratitude towards the Captain, but she was also determined to prove herself. "No, no, Captain," she said, smiling weakly. "I'm fine, really. I just need to...ah...choo!" And with that, another massive sneeze exploded from her, covering her handkerchief and making the children giggle. The Captain chuckled and took Fraulein Maria's elbow, leading her towards a nearby bench. "I think, Fraulein Maria," he said, "that you've made your point. Perhaps it's time for a little rest, and a change of plans?"
