Chapter 7: A Step Forward
Part 7
The darkness of the night seemed to dissipate as they walked towards the volleyball court, the fluorescent lights illuminating the empty space. Kageyama's eyes were drawn to the familiar markings on the floor, the nets, and the benches. It was a place where he had experienced so much joy and pain, where he had formed bonds with his teammates and rivalries with other teams. As they approached the court, Oikawa stopped and turned to Kageyama. "You know, I used to love playing here," he said, a nostalgic smile spreading across his face. "The energy of the crowd, the thrill of competition... it was exhilarating." Kageyama nodded, his eyes scanning the empty court. He could almost hear the cheers of the crowd, the sound of the ball bouncing on the floor, and the shouts of encouragement from his teammates. Oikawa took a deep breath, his eyes locked on Kageyama's. "I want you to know that I'm not just here for nostalgia's sake. I want to help you get back on your feet, to find your passion for the game again." Kageyama felt a surge of emotion at Oikawa's words. No one had asked him to play in a long time, no one had shown him such kindness and concern. He looked at Oikawa, really looked at him, and saw the genuine care in his eyes. Without a word, Oikawa gestured to the court, and Kageyama understood. They began to play, the ball bouncing on the floor as they moved in tandem. At first, Kageyama's movements were stiff, his reflexes slow. But as they played, he began to feel a sense of freedom, a sense of release. The game was just between the two of them, but it was enough. Kageyama felt his muscles warm up, his senses come alive. He started to enjoy himself, to laugh and joke with Oikawa as they played. As they took a break, Oikawa handed Kageyama a bottle of water, and they sat down on the bench together. "You're still got it," Oikawa said, grinning. Kageyama smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. "Thanks to you," he said, taking a sip of water. Oikawa placed a hand on his shoulder, his eyes serious. "I'm not just talking about your skills, Kageyama. I'm talking about your heart. You're starting to open up, to let people in." Kageyama looked away, feeling a lump form in his throat. He knew that Oikawa was right, that he had been closing himself off for too long. But with Oikawa by his side, he felt like he could face anything. As they finished their impromptu game and walked off the court, Kageyama felt a sense of hope that he hadn't felt in a long time. He knew that he still had a long way to go, but for the first time in months, he felt like he was taking a step forward. The city lights twinkled around them once again, but this time, they seemed brighter, more vibrant. Kageyama felt a sense of connection to the world around him, a sense of belonging that he had been missing for so long. And as he looked at Oikawa, he knew that he had found a friend, a friend who would help him through the dark times and celebrate with him in the good times.
