Uncertainty Fills the Air
Part 10
The sonographer, Mrs. Thompson, smiled kindly at Ashley as she began preparing for the ultrasound scan. "Okay, let's get started. Can you please remove your shoes and lie down on the table?" Ashley complied, trying to relax as Mrs. Thompson applied a gel to her abdomen. As she adjusted the ultrasound machine, Mrs. Thompson asked, "And where's your partner today?" Ashley's heart skipped a beat as she forced a smile onto her face. "Oh, he's working," she said, trying to sound casual. "He's really sorry he couldn't make it, but he had a meeting he couldn't reschedule." Mrs. Thompson nodded sympathetically. "That's understandable. I'm sure he's thinking of you both." Ashley felt a pang of guilt for lying, but she didn't want to explain the situation to a stranger. She was already anxious about the scan; she didn't need to complicate things further. As Mrs. Thompson began the scan, Ashley closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She prepared herself for what was to come, trying to push aside her worries about Gerald's absence. She focused on the baby, praying that everything would be okay. Please, God, let the baby be healthy, she thought, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What if there were complications? What if something was wrong? Ashley didn't know what would happen, but she knew she had to stay strong for Gerald and the baby. As the scan continued, Ashley felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She was anxious, scared, and hopeful all at once. She didn't know what the results would show, but she knew she had to face them head-on. Mrs. Thompson's voice broke into Ashley's thoughts. "Okay, let's take a look at the images." Ashley opened her eyes, watching as Mrs. Thompson examined the pictures on the screen. The sonographer's expression was neutral, but Ashley could sense a hint of concern. Ashley's heart began to pound in her chest. What did it mean? Was everything okay? She waited with bated breath as Mrs. Thompson continued to study the images, her mind racing with possibilities.
