Chapter 3: A Chance Encounter
Part 3
The cafeteria was buzzing with activity as Maya made her way through the crowded room, scanning the tables for an empty seat. Cody fell into step beside her, his eyes scanning the room as well. "Want to sit with my friends?" he suggested, nodding towards a table in the corner. Maya followed his gaze and spotted a group of students laughing and chatting together. There was something about the way they seemed to welcome Cody with open arms that put her at ease. She nodded, and Cody led her over to the table. As they sat down, Maya was introduced to Cody's friends: Jake, the class clown; Emily, a bookworm with a passion for literature; and Matt, a star athlete with a charming smile. The group was lively and welcoming, and Maya found herself laughing and joking with them as if she'd known them for years. Cody sat beside her, his arm brushing against hers as he reached for a sandwich. Maya felt a spark of electricity at the touch, and she quickly pulled her arm away, unsure of how to react. Cody seemed to notice her reaction, but he didn't say anything, simply smiling and turning back to the conversation. As they ate, the group discussed everything from school gossip to their plans for the weekend. Maya found herself feeling more and more at ease, and she began to wonder if she'd misjudged Cody. Maybe he was just a normal guy, after all. But as the conversation turned to Springdale High's history, Cody's expression changed. His eyes seemed to cloud over, and he grew quiet, his responses brief and guarded. Maya noticed the change and felt a pang of curiosity. What was Cody hiding? As they finished their lunch, Cody stood up, his eyes scanning the room once more. "Hey, want to walk me to my next class?" he asked Maya, his voice low and inviting. Maya hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But something about Cody's eyes drew her in, and she nodded, standing up to follow him out of the cafeteria. As they walked down the hallway, Maya felt a sense of excitement building inside her. She had a feeling that she was on the verge of discovering something, but she wasn't sure what. All she knew was that she was eager to find out more about Cody, and the secrets he seemed to be hiding.
