"A New Reality Sets In"
Part 18
The doctor left the room, and Ashley lay there for a few minutes, lost in thought. She had been expecting more questions, more probing into her mind, but instead, she was left alone with her thoughts. The silence was oppressive, and she found herself fidgeting with the restraints that held her to the bed. Just as she was starting to feel like she was going to be left alone for a while, the door opened and a tall, imposing woman walked in. She had a kind face, but her eyes seemed to bore into Ashley's soul. "Hi, I'm Karen, the social worker," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "We need to chat." Ashley's heart sank, and she shot up in bed, but the restraints pulled her back down. "Can you take these off, please?" she begged, her voice shaking. Karen sat down in the chair beside the bed, her expression sympathetic. "Not now, sweetie," she said. "Right now, we need to talk about your home situation and why you tried to end your life." Ashley shrugged, feeling a sense of hopelessness wash over her. "I don't know," she mumbled. Karen's expression turned serious. "Ashley, you're 16 years old, and you're in a situation that's clearly not safe for you. We need to remove you from your father's care, at least for now." Ashley's eyes widened in alarm. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice rising. Karen's voice was gentle, but firm. "We'll be placing you in the system, Ashley. It's not ideal, but it's necessary. We'll find a foster home for you, and we'll work with you to get the help you need." Ashley felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She'd never been away from her father before, and the thought of being taken from him was terrifying. But at the same time, she knew she couldn't stay with him. Not after what had happened. Karen's eyes locked onto hers, and Ashley saw a deep kindness there. "We'll get through this, Ashley," she said. "But we need to take things one step at a time. First, we need to get you out of here, and then we'll figure out the next steps." Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of resignation wash over her. She knew she had no choice but to trust Karen and the system. But as she looked into Karen's eyes, she saw a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something new. Something better.
