"Unspoken Emotions"

Part 40

Vanitas's ringtone cut through the peaceful morning air, shrill and insistent. Izaya groggily reached over to answer it, his eyes fluttering open to find Shizuo still lying beside him, fast asleep. He smiled to himself, remembering the events of the previous night, and the gentle way Shizuo had rested his head on his shoulder. "Hello?" Izaya's voice was husky with sleep, but he quickly cleared his throat, trying to sound more alert. "Hey, Izaya. It's Vanitas. How are you?" Vanitas's voice was cheerful, but Izaya could detect a hint of concern beneath the surface. "I'm good, thanks," Izaya replied, his eyes never leaving Shizuo's peaceful face. "What about you?" "I'm calling about Shizuo," Vanitas said, his tone turning serious. "I was wondering if you've seen him. He didn't come home last night, and I was getting a bit worried." Izaya smirked to himself, feeling a thrill of satisfaction at the thought of Shizuo's defection. "Shizu-chan is with me now," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "He doesn't love you anymore, or never did." There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Izaya wondered if Vanitas had hung up. But then, Vanitas's voice came back, laced with hurt and anger. "What are you talking about, Izaya? Shizuo and I... we had a connection. I know he felt something for me." Izaya chuckled, feeling a sense of mischief wash over him. "I'm talking about the fact that Shizuo chose to spend the night with me, not you," he said, his voice low and teasing. "I'm talking about the way he looks at me, the way he smiles at me. You're just not in the picture anymore, Vanitas." Vanitas's voice turned cold, and Izaya could almost hear the anger and frustration radiating through the phone. "You're just trying to get under my skin, Izaya," Vanitas spat. "But it's not going to work. Shizuo and I... we're meant to be together." Izaya laughed, feeling a sense of satisfaction at having gotten under Vanitas's skin. "I don't think so, Vanitas," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "Shizuo's made his choice, and it's not you." Shizuo stirred beside him, his eyes fluttering open as he looked up at Izaya with a confused expression. Izaya smiled, feeling a sense of affection wash over him, and mouthed "good morning" to Shizuo, who smiled back, looking sleepy and adorable. "I think Shizuo wants to talk to you," Izaya said, his voice low and teasing. "Do you want to talk to him?" There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Izaya wondered if Vanitas had hung up. But then, Vanitas's voice came back, laced with resignation. "No, I don't think that's necessary," Vanitas said, his voice cold. "I'll talk to him later." Izaya grinned to himself, feeling a sense of satisfaction at having won the battle, at least for now. "Suit yourself," he said, his voice dripping with amusement. "But I'm sure Shizuo would love to talk to you. He's been thinking about you a lot lately." Izaya glanced over at Shizuo, who was looking at him with a curious expression. Izaya smiled, feeling a sense of affection wash over him. "I think Shizuo has some things to say to you, Vanitas," he said, his voice low and teasing. "But for now, let's just say that Shizuo's happy, and that's all that matters."
