"The Descent into Madness"
Part 28
As they stood there, frozen in shock, their phones suddenly buzzed in unison, signaling the arrival of new emails. Sophia and Alex exchanged a terrified glance, their hearts sinking in unison. They both knew that they couldn't bear to look at the screen again, but they were powerless to resist. Sophia's hands were shaking as she picked up her phone, and Alex mirrored her movement, their eyes fixed on the screens. The subject lines were the same: "You'll never escape". The emails were identical, with a series of images that made their blood run cold. The first image showed them sitting in the Italian restaurant, wearing the same low-cut dresses they had worn on their date. In the picture, Sophia was being served by a waiter, while Alex was sitting across from her, a look of terror on her face. But it was what was happening in the background that made Sophia's stomach turn - the chef, standing in the kitchen, was holding a cleaver and beheading a person who looked exactly like Alex. The second image was taken on the street, where they had walked hand in hand after dinner. In the picture, two masked individuals were standing on either side of them, pulling their chins back with knives pressed against their necks. But what made the image even more disturbing was that it was exactly as they had walked out of the restaurant, with the same buildings and streetlights in the background. The third image made Sophia's heart stop. It was a picture of them sitting on the very same couch they were currently sitting on, looking up at something with terror in their eyes. The only difference was that there were red lines forming on their necks, as if someone was cutting them. But it was what came next that made them both scream. A video attachment opened, showing the same images, but this time, they were moving. The video showed their heads falling off, one by one, still wearing the same low-cut dresses. The image was so graphic, so realistic, that Sophia felt like she was going to pass out. Alex's hand instinctively went to her neck, as if she could protect herself from the horror that was unfolding on the screen. Sophia's eyes were fixed on the video, her mind reeling with the implications. Who was doing this? And how were they able to capture their exact movements, their exact outfits? The room seemed to spin around them, and Sophia felt like she was trapped in a nightmare from which she couldn't wake up. She looked at Alex, and saw the same fear and despair reflected back at her. They were running out of time, and they had no idea how to stop this descent into madness.
