"Facing the Truth"

Part 8

The rest of Pam's shift was a blur as she struggled to focus on her patients. Her mind kept wandering back to the rumor she had overheard, and she couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach. She tried to push it aside and concentrate on her work, but it was no use. The image of Doug with Emily from ICU kept playing in her mind, and she felt a growing sense of distrust. As the day went on, Pam found herself avoiding Doug whenever possible. She didn't want to talk to him, didn't want to look at him, and didn't want to hear his voice. She knew it was childish, but she couldn't help it. She felt hurt and vulnerable, and she didn't know how to process her emotions. As the evening drew to a close, Pam decided to head home, hoping that some time and space would help her clear her head. She quickly changed out of her scrubs and said goodbye to her colleagues, but as she was leaving, she heard her phone buzzing in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a string of missed calls and texts from Doug. Her heart sank as she read his messages. He was trying to reach her, and she had ignored him. She didn't know what to say to him, so she just kept her phone in her pocket and walked out of the hospital. But Doug was not one to give up easily. As Pam was walking to her car, she saw him walking towards her, a look of concern on his face. "Hey, what's going on?" he asked, catching up to her. "I've been trying to reach you all day. You okay?" Pam hesitated, not wanting to talk to him. But he looked genuinely concerned, so she reluctantly followed him into the breakroom. They sat down at a table, and Doug asked her again what was wrong. Pam took a deep breath and decided to confront him. "I heard something today," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "I overheard some nurses talking about you and Emily from ICU. They said you're back together." Doug's expression changed from concern to shock, and he reached out to take her hand. "Pam, that's not true," he said, his voice firm. "I don't know where that rumor came from, but it's completely false. I've been trying to reach you all day because I was worried about you, not because I was with Emily." Pam looked at him, searching for any sign of deception. But all she saw was sincerity and concern. "Really?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Doug nodded. "Really," he said. "I care about you, Pam. I don't know what's going on with Emily, but I can tell you that I'm not interested in her. I'm interested in you." Pam felt a wave of relief wash over her, followed by a sense of embarrassment. She had jumped to conclusions and accused him without giving him a chance to explain. "I'm sorry," she said, looking down at her hands. "I shouldn't have assumed the worst." Doug squeezed her hand. "You have every right to be upset," he said. "But I promise you, Pam, I'm not playing games with you. I want to get to know you better, and I hope you'll give me the chance."
