"A Moment of Crisis"

Part 19

As they journeyed on, Eira's keen ears picked up a faint sound, a soft whimper that seemed to come from a nearby thicket. She turned to Kael and Lyra, her eyes locked on theirs, and nodded towards the underbrush. Kael and Lyra exchanged a concerned glance, and without a word, they followed Eira as she crept towards the source of the sound. As they pushed through the thicket, a scene unfolded before them that made their blood run cold. A woman, clearly distraught, cowered against a tree, her eyes wide with fear as she clutched a small child to her chest. Nearby, a healer, wounded and struggling to stay upright, leaned against another tree, his eyes fixed on the creature that had them cornered. The beast, a massive dire wolf, its fur matted and dirty, snarled and bared its teeth as it paced back and forth, its eyes fixed on its prey. The air was thick with tension, and Kael, Lyra, and Eira knew they had to act fast. Without hesitation, Kael raised his hands, and a burst of magical energy shot out, striking the dire wolf and momentarily stunning it. Eira quickly took aim with her shortbow, firing arrow after arrow into the wolf's thick hide, but the beast was far from down. Lyra, her dragon strength coursing through her veins, charged forward, her fists flying as she struck the wolf with a series of powerful blows. The wolf yelped in pain as Lyra's fists connected with its skull, but it refused to go down. The woman, taking advantage of the distraction, grabbed her child and stumbled backwards, trying to put some distance between herself and the beast. The healer, gritting his teeth, tried to stand, but his wounds were too severe, and he collapsed back against the tree, his eyes fixed on Lyra as she battled the wolf. Kael, seeing that Eira's arrows weren't having the desired effect, summoned another burst of magical energy, this time channeling it into a blast of flame that engulfed the wolf. The beast howled in pain as the flames washed over it, its fur igniting in a fiery blaze. Eira took advantage of the wolf's distraction to fire another arrow, this one striking true and piercing the wolf's heart. The beast let out a final yelp, and then collapsed to the ground, its body smoldering from Kael's flames. As the dust settled, Lyra approached the woman and child, who were watching the scene with wide eyes. "Are you alright?" Lyra asked, her voice gentle. The woman nodded, still clutching her child tightly. "Y-yes, thank you," she stammered. "We were on our way to Greenhaven, but we were ambushed by that... thing." The healer, struggling to sit up, looked at Kael and Lyra with a mixture of gratitude and awe. "I am Althaeon," he said, his voice weak. "And I think I owe you my life." Kael smiled, helping Althaeon to sit up. "We're just glad we were here to help," he said. "But we should get moving. We can't stay here for long." Eira nodded, her eyes scanning the surrounding area. "I think I can help with that," she said, turning to the woman. "We're headed to Greenhaven as well. Would you like to travel with us?" The woman nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "Thank you," she said. "I would be forever grateful." As they stood up, Althaeon groaned in pain, clutching his side. Lyra quickly examined his wounds, her dragon senses guiding her. "We need to get him to Greenhaven as quickly as possible," she said. "His wounds are serious." With a newfound sense of purpose, the group set off towards Greenhaven, their journey now complicated by the addition of Althaeon, the woman, and her child. But they were determined to get them to safety, no matter what lay ahead.
