Uncovering the Past

Part 14

Doug and Pam stepped out of the office building, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. They walked in silence, side by side, until they reached a quiet park nearby. The sun was shining, casting a warm glow over the lush green grass and vibrant flowers. They found a secluded bench, surrounded by tall trees, and sat down. Doug turned to Pam, his eyes filled with concern. "I'm so sorry about what just happened," he said, his voice low and soothing. "I had no idea she was going to show up like that." Pam's expression softened, and she reached out to touch his arm. "It's not your fault," she said. "I'm just glad I got to see her for who she really is." Doug's eyes narrowed, and he shook his head. "You don't need to worry about Emily," he said. "She's just trying to stir up trouble. We've been over for a long time, and I'm not interested in going back to the way things were." Pam's eyes searched his face, looking for reassurance. "I trust you," she said. "But I do want to know more about her. Why is she so angry?" Doug sighed, and leaned back on the bench. "Emily and I were together for a few years," he said. "We had some good times, but we also had some rough patches. She's always been a bit possessive and controlling, and it got to the point where I felt suffocated. I ended things between us, and she didn't take it well." Pam's eyes widened, and she leaned in closer. "What happened after that?" she asked. Doug rubbed his temples, collecting his thoughts. "She went through a phase where she would show up at my work, at my apartment, anywhere I was. She would call and text me constantly, trying to get me to take her back. I had to get a restraining order, and eventually, she backed off." Pam's face was filled with sympathy. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that," she said. Doug's eyes met hers, and he smiled weakly. "It's not something I like to talk about," he said. "But I want you to know that I'm not interested in going back to the way things were with Emily. I'm happy with you, Pam, and I don't want anything to come between us." Pam's heart swelled with emotion, and she reached out to take his hand. "I'm happy with you too, Doug," she said. "And I trust you. We'll get through this together, okay?" Doug's face lit up with a smile, and he squeezed her hand. "Okay," he said. "We will."
