Uncovering the Scars of the Past
Part 8
Maya's eyes dropped to the floor as she settled into the couch, Nick's arm still wrapped around her shoulders. Sabrina sat across from them, a concerned expression on her face. The warmth and coziness of the living room seemed to dissipate, replaced by a sense of unease and vulnerability. "I want to tell you both something," Maya said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Something I've never told anyone before." She paused, taking a deep breath as she gathered her courage. Nick's grip on her shoulders tightened, and Sabrina's eyes locked onto Maya's, filled with encouragement. Maya's gaze drifted off, lost in the memories she was about to share. "I used to cut myself," Maya said, her voice cracking. "It was a few years ago, when I was still friends with Riley and dating Lucas." Her eyes flashed with pain as she recalled the memories. "Riley was my best friend, or so I thought. She made my life a living hell, bullying me relentlessly. And Lucas... he chose her over me. He would ignore me, exclude me from things, and make me feel like I was worthless." Sabrina's face twisted in disgust, and Nick's arm pulled Maya closer, as if trying to shield her from the pain. "But that wasn't all," Maya continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "My father... he was abusive. Physically and sexually." The words seemed to rip from her soul, leaving her gasping for air. "He would rape me, whip me with his belt... make me feel like I was nothing." The room fell silent, the only sound the quiet hum of the heater. Nick's face was etched with horror, and Sabrina's eyes shone with tears. "I felt so alone, so broken," Maya said, her voice cracking. "I didn't know how to deal with the pain, so I turned to cutting. It was a way to release the emotions, to feel something else besides the numbness." Sabrina got up from her seat and wrapped her arms around Maya, holding her tightly. Nick joined in, enveloping them both in a warm hug. "I'm so sorry, Maya," Sabrina whispered, her voice muffled against Maya's hair. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that." Maya's eyes welled up with tears as she buried her face in Sabrina's shoulder. "I'm just glad I can finally talk about it," she said, her voice muffled. "I'm glad I have you both to share this with." As they held each other, Maya felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was ready to face her demons, armed with the love and support of Nick and Sabrina. The scars of her past would always be there, but with her friends by her side, she felt ready to heal, to move forward, and to find happiness.
