Chapter 6: A Delicate Exchange
Part 5
The morning sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground as Jian escorted Ling back to Mei's mother. The silence between them was a bit awkward, but Jian couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. He had done it – he had completed the task that Wu had set for him. As they approached the small hut, Mei's mother looked up, her eyes narrowing slightly as she took in Ling's disheveled appearance. Jian felt a twinge of guilt, but Ling just smiled and nodded at the older woman. "Mei's mother, I'm back," Ling said, her voice soft. "The deed is done." Mei's mother looked at Jian, her expression unreadable. "I see," she said finally. "And how was the... transaction?" Jian felt his face grow hot, but he tried to keep his expression neutral. "It was... successful," he said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. Mei's mother nodded, her eyes glinting with amusement. "I see," she said again. "Well, in that case, I suppose you deserve a reward." Ling shot Jian a warning look, but Jian just shrugged. He wasn't sure what to make of Mei's mother, but he was determined to play it cool. As they stood there, Jian realized that he still had Ling and Mei as captives. He wasn't sure what to do with them, but he knew that he couldn't just leave them standing there. "Why don't I offer you all a meal?" Jian suggested, trying to sound as gracious as possible. "I've got some simple food that might help to... ease the tension." Ling and Mei exchanged a look, but Mei's mother nodded. "That would be appreciated," she said. "We're famished." Jian nodded, feeling a bit relieved. He led them to a nearby clearing, where he had set up a small fire and prepared a simple but tasty meal of roasted meat and steamed vegetables. As they ate, the tension between them began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of awkward camaraderie. Jian tried to make small talk, but it was clear that no one was quite sure what to say. Finally, Jian pushed his plate away and stood up. "I should probably report back to Wu," he said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. "He'll be expecting to hear that the task is done." Ling and Mei exchanged a look, but Mei's mother just nodded. "Yes, I'm sure he will," she said. "Do go ahead, Jian. I'm sure Wu will be... eager to hear the details." Jian nodded, feeling a bit uneasy. He wasn't sure what Wu's reaction would be, but he was determined to face it head-on. With a final nod, he turned and set off, leaving the three women behind.
