"A Secret Revealed"
Part 3
One day, her brother Lawrence was extra curious, and Emily could sense it as she walked towards the barn. She tried to quicken her pace, but Lawrence caught up to her easily, his long strides matching hers. As she reached the door, he snatched the letter out of her hand, and Emily tried to get it back, but he was much taller than her. He held it out of her reach, and Emily's heart sank as she realized her secret was about to be exposed. "Give it back, Lawrence!" she demanded, trying to sound firmer than she felt. But Lawrence just chuckled and began to read the letter out loud. Emily's face burned with embarrassment as he read the words she had cherished so much: "My dearest Emily..." She tried to snatch the letter again, but Lawrence held it firm, his eyes scanning the page. As he read on, his expression changed from amusement to shock, and then to anger. "You're...you're conspiring with a British soldier?" he accused, his voice low and menacing. Emily shook her head, trying to defend herself. "He's not like that, Lawrence. He's just a friend." Lawrence raised an eyebrow. "A friend? Any man who starts a letter with 'My dearest Emily' doesn't consider a girl like you just a friend." Emily lowered her head, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks. She knew Lawrence was right, but she didn't want to admit it. Lawrence's voice was cold. "You're a fool if you believe that, Emily. And what's worse, you're putting yourself and our family at risk. What if Father finds out?" Emily looked up, pleading with her brother. "Please, Lawrence, don't tell Father. I promise I'll be careful." Lawrence's expression softened slightly, but his eyes still held a warning. "I won't tell Father...yet. But don't count on me to stand up for you when he eventually finds out. You're on your own with this one, Emily." As Lawrence handed the letter back to her, Emily felt a chill run down her spine. She knew she had to be more careful, but she couldn't help the way she felt. And now, with Lawrence's threat hanging over her, she wondered if she could ever be with Will, or if their love was doomed to remain a secret forever.
