**Through the Shadowed Woods of Kaelos**
Part 20
The morning light struggled to penetrate the dense canopy above, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor as Scorch and Sir Valoric set out on the long journey to the port town of Ravenshire. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a far cry from the warm sunshine and bustling streets they had left behind. As they rode, the trees grew taller and the underbrush thicker, until it seemed as though they were navigating a tunnel of greenery. Scorch's ears perked up, and she sniffed the air, sensing that they were not alone in the forest. Sir Valoric, too, was on high alert, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Beastmen," Scorch whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling of leaves. "The tribe of Kaelos." Sir Valoric nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "Remember, they are not always hostile, but they can be... unpredictable." As they rounded a bend in the path, a group of figures emerged from the trees. Scorch and Sir Valoric reined in their mounts, taking in the sight of the beastmen. They were humanoid in appearance, with skin that ranged from golden brown to dark tan, and features that were both feline and human. Their eyes gleamed in the dim light, and they regarded the duo with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. The leader of the group, a towering figure with the ears of a lion and the tail of a panther, stepped forward. He wore a loincloth made of supple leather, and his body was adorned with intricate tattoos that seemed to shimmer in the dappled light. "Greetings, travelers," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I am Kael, leader of the tribe of Kaelos. What brings you to our woods?" Sir Valoric dismounted, approaching Kael with a cautious air. "We mean no harm, Kael. We are on a journey to Ravenshire, and we seek only to pass through your lands unmolested." Kael's eyes narrowed, and he studied Scorch and Sir Valoric for a long moment. Then, to their surprise, he nodded. "Very well. You may pass through our lands, but be warned: the woods are full of dangers, and not all of them are as... civilized as we are." With that, Kael turned and vanished into the trees, followed by his tribe. Scorch and Sir Valoric exchanged a look, then remounted and continued on their journey. As they rode deeper into the forest, the trees seemed to grow taller and the shadows darker, until it seemed as though they were being watched by unseen eyes. Scorch shivered, despite the warmth of the day. "I don't like this," she whispered to Sir Valoric. The knight placed a reassuring hand on her neck. "We'll be fine, Scorch. We just need to get through the woods and reach the coast." But as they rode on, the silence of the forest seemed to grow thicker, until it seemed as though they were being slowly enveloped by some unseen presence. And Scorch couldn't shake the feeling that they were being herded, led deeper into the woods by some unknown force.
