Shattered Reality
Part 13
The room seemed to fade away, leaving only Ashley, her mother, and the doctor's somber expression. The silence was deafening, and Ashley's mind was reeling from the doctor's words. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare, and she couldn't wake up. The cold dread that had crept up her spine earlier had now taken over her entire body, leaving her numb and helpless. Dr. Thompson's voice seemed to be coming from a distance, discussing treatment options and prognosis, but Ashley wasn't listening. She was too busy trying to process the news that her world had just been turned upside down. The cancer had spread, and it was terminal. The words echoed in her mind, refusing to sink in. Ashley's eyes met her mother's, and she saw the tears welling up in her eyes. Susan's face was pale, and her lips were pressed together in a tight line. Ashley felt a lump form in her throat as she realized that her mother was trying to be strong for her. "Ashley, sweetie, I'm so sorry," Dr. Thompson said, his voice softening. "We'll do everything we can to make you comfortable and-" But Ashley wasn't interested in hearing the rest. She had heard enough. With a shaking voice, she whispered, "It's terminal, isn't it?" The room fell silent again, and Dr. Thompson's expression confirmed Ashley's worst fears. Ashley's mother held her close, tears streaming down her face. "Yes, baby, I'm so sorry," Susan whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "We'll face this together, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a wave of despair wash over her. She was going to die. The thought was too much to bear, and she buried her face in her mother's shoulder, letting the tears flow. The world around her had come crashing down, and she didn't know how to pick up the pieces. As they held each other, Ashley felt a sense of acceptance wash over her. She knew that she had to face the reality of her situation, no matter how hard it was. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, and looked up at her mother. "I want to know the truth," Ashley said, her voice firm. "I want to know how much time I have left, and what I can expect. I want to know everything." Dr. Thompson nodded, his expression somber. "We'll discuss all of that, Ashley. But for now, let's just take some time to process this, okay?" Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She was going to face this, and she was going to do it with her mother by her side.
