A New Beginning
Part 6
"I'm sorry for being angry," Ashley said to Karen, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just didn't want to answer anything yet." Karen's expression softened, and she nodded understandingly. "It's okay, sweetie," she said, her voice gentle. "I know it's a lot to take in." Ashley's eyes dropped, and she looked down at her plate, the uneaten food staring back at her like a reminder of her awkwardness. Karen followed her gaze and sighed, her eyes lingering on Ashley's scars. "Tomorrow, we will get you new clothes for your new school," Karen said, her voice filled with a warmth that made Ashley feel a little more at ease. Ashley nodded, feeling a small sense of excitement at the prospect of new clothes. She had been wearing the same stained and tattered outfit for so long that the thought of something new and clean was almost too much to bear. The rest of the dinner was spent in a comfortable silence, the Smiths chatting and laughing around her, but Ashley didn't feel like an outsider anymore. She felt like she was being slowly drawn into their world, and it was a feeling she couldn't quite get used to. As they finished dinner and began to clear the table, Ethan turned to Ashley and asked, "Hey, do you want to help me with the dishes?" Ashley hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do, but Karen encouraged her with a nod. As Ashley began to wash the dishes, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. The warm water and soap suds were soothing, and she found herself lost in the simple task. Mia and Ethan chattered and laughed as they dried the dishes, and Ashley couldn't help but smile, feeling a small sense of belonging. As they finished up, Karen handed Ashley a towel to dry her hands. "You're doing a great job," she said, smiling. "Why don't you go get ready for bed? We've got an early morning tomorrow." Ashley nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She was tired, and the thought of a new bed and a good night's sleep was almost too much to bear. She made her way to the bathroom, feeling a sense of wonder at the simple luxuries that the Smiths took for granted. As she washed her face and brushed her teeth, Ashley caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. She looked tired and worn, but there was something in her eyes that she hadn't seen in a long time - hope. And as she climbed into bed, feeling the softness of the mattress and the warmth of the blankets, Ashley knew that she was exactly where she was meant to be.
