Chapter 13: A Change in Plans
Part 13
The sound of John's car fading into the distance left Pamela with a sense of stillness. She stood there for a moment, taking in the serene surroundings of the estate, feeling a little wistful that their relaxing day had been cut short. But as she turned to head back to the house, she noticed a figure walking towards her from the gardens. It was Emily, the estate's garden manager, with a warm smile on her face. "Good morning, Pamela," Emily said, as she approached. "I see John had to leave suddenly. I hope everything is okay." Pamela nodded, "Yeah, something came up at work. But I'm fine, thanks for asking." She paused, taking a deep breath of the fragrant air. "It's so peaceful here. I was just thinking about how much I love this place." Emily's eyes lit up. "I'm glad you do. I was thinking, since John is away, you might like to explore the estate a bit more. We have a lot of hidden gems that not many visitors get to see." Pamela's curiosity was piqued. "I'd love to," she said, and Emily led her off the main path and into the gardens. As they walked, Emily pointed out different plants and flowers, sharing stories about their history and significance. Pamela was fascinated by the wealth of knowledge Emily had, and she found herself feeling more and more at ease in the estate's surroundings. Eventually, Emily led her to a small, secluded pond, surrounded by tall trees and filled with water lilies. A small wooden bench sat at the water's edge, and Emily invited Pamela to sit down. "This is one of my favorite spots on the estate," Emily said. "It's so peaceful and calming. I come here to think and clear my head when I need to." Pamela sat down, feeling the stress of the morning melt away. She closed her eyes, taking in the sounds of nature around her, and let out a deep sigh. As she sat there, she heard the sound of footsteps behind her. She opened her eyes to see a figure approaching, but she couldn't make out who it was. "Who's that?" she asked Emily, nodding towards the approaching figure. Emily turned to look, and a look of surprise crossed her face. "That's James, the owner of the estate," she said. "I didn't know he was back from his trip." Pamela's curiosity was piqued, and she stood up to greet James, wondering what his presence might mean for her and John's stay at the estate. As James approached, Pamela couldn't help but notice the look of determination in his eyes, and she wondered what lay ahead.
