Tensions Rise

Part 20

The ER was slowly starting to calm down, but John Carter's mind was still racing with the events of the night. He and his team had managed to stabilize both Emily and the patient in room 3, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. As he walked back to the nurse's station, he noticed Doug standing off to the side, his eyes fixed on a chart in his hand. Doug looked up as John approached, and his expression was grim. "Hey, what's going on?" John asked, but Doug just shook his head. "I don't know, John, but I'm starting to get really concerned," Doug said, his voice low. "I've been reviewing the charts from tonight, and there are some inconsistencies that don't add up." John frowned, feeling a sense of unease. "What kind of inconsistencies?" he asked, his tone neutral. Doug hesitated, then handed John the chart. "Look at this," he said. "Emily's vitals were stable, but then suddenly they dropped. And the patient in room 3, his medical history doesn't match the injuries he sustained." John's eyes scanned the chart, and he felt a growing sense of unease. This didn't look right. "Doug, I think you're reading too much into this," John said, trying to keep his tone calm. "We're short-staffed tonight, and mistakes can happen." But Doug wasn't having it. "I'm telling you, John, something's not right here," he said, his voice rising. "And I'm not just talking about the medical charts. I've seen some weird things tonight, things that don't add up." John's expression turned defensive. "What are you talking about, Doug?" he asked, his voice firm. "I'm talking about James being here," Doug said, his eyes locked on John's. "And I'm talking about the way you've been acting lately, always seeming to know more than you're letting on." John's face went cold, and he felt a surge of anger. "What are you insinuating, Doug?" he asked, his voice tight. "I'm insinuating that you know more than you're telling us," Doug said, his voice firm. "And I'm not going to stand by and watch you put this team in danger." The tension between them was palpable, and the rest of the ER staff began to stare. John took a step closer to Doug, his voice low and menacing. "Doug, back off," he said. "You don't know what you're talking about." But Doug didn't back down. "I'm not going to back off, John," he said. "I'm going to get to the bottom of this, and if that means going over your head, then so be it." John's face went red with anger, and for a moment, it looked like he might lash out at Doug. But then he turned and stormed off, leaving Doug looking worried and concerned. As John walked away, he couldn't shake the feeling that Doug was getting too close to the truth. And he knew that he had to do something to stop him.
