New Connections

Part 32

Karen smiled warmly as they walked down the street, one hour left before they reached their destination. She turned to Ashley, her eyes sparkling with a plan. "Wait here with me for a second," she said, her voice low. She whispered something to John, who nodded and took off in a different direction. Ashley's eyes widened with curiosity, but before she could ask any questions, Karen grabbed her hand. "Let's go take a look at the pet store," she said, her eyes shining with excitement. Ashley's face lit up, and she nodded enthusiastically. "Okay, Ashley said, as they walked into the pet store. The store was filled with the sounds of chirping birds, meowing cats, and barking dogs. Ashley's eyes scanned the rows of cages and aquariums, her heart racing with delight. Karen smiled, watching Ashley's reaction. "You're worried about moving schools, huh?" she asked, her voice gentle. Ashley nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "I don't wanna leave the state," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It feels like I'm leaving family behind. My mom is buried here, and my brother... my dad lives here." Tears began to build in Ashley's eyes, and Karen pulled her into a warm hug. "I know it's hard, sweetie," she said, her voice soft. "But you'll make new friends, and you'll find new things to love about your new school. And we'll be here for you, every step of the way." Ashley pulled back, her eyes red-rimmed. "I just feel like I'm leaving everything behind," she said, her voice cracking. Karen smiled, her eyes filled with understanding. "You're not leaving anything behind, Ashley," she said. "You're just adding new things to your life. New friends, new experiences, new memories. And we'll be here to support you, always." Just then, John walked back into the pet store, a small box in his hand. "I got it," he said, holding out the box. Ashley's eyes widened as Karen opened the box, revealing a shiny new phone. "For me?" Ashley asked, her voice filled with surprise. Karen nodded, smiling. "For you, sweetie. So you can stay connected with us, and with your dad, no matter where you are." Ashley's eyes filled with tears again, this time of gratitude. "Thank you, Karen," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Karen hugged her tightly. "Anytime, Ashley," she said. "We're in this together, now."
