"Behind the Mask"
Part 4
As we stood in the playroom, trying to come up with a plan to corral the twins, Sophia suddenly doubled over, her body shaking with laughter. At first, I thought it was just a normal sibling giggle, but as the moments ticked by, her laughter grew louder and more uncontrollable. I felt a surge of confusion and concern, wondering what was so funny. But as I looked into her eyes, I saw a spark of mischief that made my heart skip a beat. She was laughing at me. I felt a sting of embarrassment as I realized I had been completely oblivious to whatever joke Sophia had picked up on. My face grew hot as I tried to process what was happening. After a moment, Sophia finally managed to compose herself, wiping tears from her eyes. "I almost held it together," she said, her voice still shaking with mirth. "I can’t believe how stupid you are." Her tone was jarring, and I felt a pang of hurt. But it was the look in her eyes that really threw me off. Gone was the sweet, curious expression from earlier. Instead, she looked at me with a mixture of disdain and amusement. I felt a surge of defensiveness, but before I could respond, Sophia continued. "You really think you're in charge here, don't you?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You think you're the big brother, and we're all just going to look up to you?" I felt a sting from her words, and I realized that Sophia didn't see me as her big brother at all. In her eyes, I was just someone her mom had brought home from...before. I was an outsider, and she was the one who really knew how things worked around here. Sophia's gaze drifted away from mine, and she turned to walk out of the playroom, leaving me standing there feeling foolish and unsure. I watched her go, feeling a sense of unease wash over me. I had a feeling that I was in for a lot more of Sophia's sass and attitude in the days to come.
