**Chapter 1: Burden of Responsibilities**
Part 1
The alarm blared to life on Ashley Frangipane's cluttered nightstand, jolting her awake. She rubbed her tired eyes, trying to shake off the exhaustion. Another day had begun, and with it came another list of responsibilities that seemed to suffocate her. At just 19 years old, Ashley felt like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She glanced over at her son, Ender, who was sleeping peacefully in his toddler bed, his curly brown hair messy from sleep. Ashley's heart swelled with love and guilt. She was a single teen mother, and the pressure to provide for her child weighed heavily on her. Ender was 4 years old now, and he needed her more than ever. Ashley slowly got out of bed and began getting ready for the day. She had a part-time job at "The Cozy Cup," a low-pay cafe in her hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey. It wasn't much, but it was something. She needed every penny she could get to make ends meet. As she dressed in the same worn jeans and faded t-shirt from the day before, her mind wandered to her mother, Nicole. At 42, Nicole was fighting a losing battle against breast and lung cancer. Ashley had taken on the responsibility of caring for her, too. It was a heavy burden to bear, especially considering Ashley's own young age. The apartment was small, and Ashley had to navigate around piles of medical equipment, empty food containers, and unwashed laundry. She quickly made Ender's breakfast – oatmeal with fruit – while he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "Mommy, I'm hungry!" Ender exclaimed, his big brown eyes sparkling with excitement. "I know, baby, and I'm almost ready to take you to daycare," Ashley replied, trying to keep her tone cheerful. As she got Ender dressed and ready for the day, Ashley's thoughts turned to the looming medical bills and the dwindling bank account. Her mother's treatment was expensive, and Ashley's part-time job barely covered their living expenses. She often found herself juggling bills and making impossible choices between paying the rent or buying groceries. The walk to daycare was short, but Ashley's anxiety grew with every step. How would she manage to make it through the day? Would her mother be okay? Could she somehow, miraculously, find a way to provide a better life for Ender? As Ashley handed Ender over to the daycare staff, he looked up at her with tears in his eyes. "I don't wanna go, Mommy!" he wailed. Ashley knelt down and hugged him tightly. "I know, baby, but Mommy has to go to work. I'll be back to pick you up soon, I promise. You'll be safe here, and you'll have fun with the other kids." Ender sniffled and nodded, but Ashley could see the worry etched on his little face. She knew he felt her stress, sensed her fear. She took a deep breath, trying to compose herself before heading to The Cozy Cup. As she walked to work, Ashley felt the weight of her responsibilities bearing down on her. How would she keep everything together? And what lay ahead for her, her mother, and her young son? The uncertainty was suffocating, but Ashley knew she had to keep moving forward, no matter what.
