A Chance Reunion in the Night
Part 33
Kael led the party through the winding streets of the town, eventually stopping in front of a bustling tavern. The sign above the door creaked in the gentle breeze, bearing the image of a foaming mug and the words "The Red Griffin Inn". Kael pushed open the door, gesturing for the group to follow him inside. The tavern was warm and lively, filled with the smell of roasting meat and freshly brewed ale. The patrons were a mix of travelers and locals, all gathered around tables or at the bar, enjoying a pint or a meal. Kael made his way through the crowd, nodding to a few familiar faces as he went. He stopped at a large table near the fire, where a few empty chairs waited. "Let's grab a table and I'll fill you in on what's been going on," he said, already sitting down and motioning for the others to do the same. As they sat, a serving maid came over to take their order. Kael recommended the tavern's specialty, a hearty stew made with local ingredients. Valoric, Eira, and Scorch agreed, and soon they were all enjoying a warm, savory meal. Kael took a bite of his stew before launching into an explanation of the situation. "It started a few weeks ago," he said, his voice low. "Reports of people disappearing in the countryside. At first, we thought it was just bandits or wild beasts, but then we started hearing rumors of something more... sinister." Valoric's grip on his spoon tightened, and Eira's eyes widened with concern. Scorch's expression remained calm, but her eyes narrowed slightly. Kael continued, "It seems that a group of... cultists, I suppose you could call them, have been operating in the area. They're rumored to be searching for something, or someone. We don't know what their ultimate goal is, but we do know they're involved in the disappearances." Valoric set his spoon down, his mind racing. "I'll lend a hand keeping an eye out for suspicious activity," he said, looking at Kael. "We just arrived, but we'll be staying for a bit. If you're tracking these cultists, I'd be happy to help." Kael nodded, a look of gratitude on his face. "I appreciate that, Valoric. It's always good to have someone watching your back. And with your... particular set of skills, I'm sure we can count on you to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary." The group chatted for a while, discussing the situation and getting caught up on each other's lives. As the evening wore on, the conversation turned to more casual topics – old battles, shared memories, and the like. The tension was still there, but it was tempered by the warmth of the fire, the camaraderie of old friends, and the promise of a new adventure together. As they finished their meal and the tavern began to quiet down, Kael leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "It's been too long, my friends," he said, smiling. "I'm glad we're together again. And who knows? Maybe this time, we can take care of whatever evil is plaguing this countryside once and for all."
